Dango Ouattara scored a second-half equaliser as Brentford came from behind to draw 1-1 with Hull City at MKM Stadium.

Oli McBurnie had given the hosts the lead from the penalty spot during the first half, before Ouattara struck after the break to secure a Premier League point for the Bees.

Keith Andrews made three changes to his starting XI, with Mamadou Sangaré and Aaron Hickey replacing the suspended midfield duo of Vitaly Janelt and Yehor Yarmoliuk. Kevin Schade also returned to the side, with Jaidon Anthony named among the substitutes.

Brentford created the first opportunity after 11 minutes. Ouattara pounced on a loose pass and knocked the ball beyond Alfie Herrington before using his pace to reach it first. The Hull defender recovered, but Ouattara retained possession and laid the ball back to Hickey on the edge of the penalty area. His low effort was comfortably saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Hull were awarded a penalty midway through the first half. Caoimhín Kelleher played a short pass towards Hickey inside the six-yard box, but Tim Iroegbunam applied pressure and won possession before being brought down by the Scotland international.

McBurnie stepped up and converted the resulting spot-kick to give the hosts the lead heading into the break.

The Bees began to apply more pressure after the interval, with the wind continuing to swirl around the stadium.

Schade delivered a dangerous cross which Tzolakis could only parry away, but Ouattara was unable to turn home the loose ball. Mathias Jensen then collected possession outside the area and saw his resulting effort deflected wide.

Andrews turned to Mikkel Damsgaard and Anthony just after the hour mark, and the substitutes made an immediate impact.

Damsgaard combined with Anthony before the latter delivered a cross into a dangerous area which Lewie Coyle was unable to clear. Igor Thiago, despite being closely marked, managed to prod the ball towards Ouattara, who converted from close range to draw Brentford level.

The Bees threatened again five minutes later. Thiago won a flick-on before Anthony nipped in ahead of a Hull defender and found himself in space on the edge of the area. The winger took his shot early and almost caught Tzolakis out, but his powerful effort flashed narrowly wide.

Hull responded at the other end when Mohamed-Ali Cho was played in behind the Brentford defence. The substitute raced away from Sepp van den Berg before cutting inside and shooting, but Kelleher made a strong save with his feet.

Brentford continued to push for a winner. Anthony's header was kept out by Tzolakis before Ouattara also tested the Greece international with a headed effort as the Bees increased the pressure.

Hull had a good opportunity of their own with a minute of normal time remaining. Cho beat Michael Kayode down the left and crossed towards substitute Joe Gelhardt, but Sangaré did enough to put the forward under pressure and his effort travelled wide.

Andrews reflects on Hull draw

Reaction: Keith Andrews reflects on Hull City draw

Keith Andrews admitted Brentford did not reach the levels he wanted in their 1-1 draw with Hull.

“It was always going to be a very difficult game coming here,” said Andrews. “You need to win your battles, do the gritty side of the game really well and show the level of quality, conviction and speed of your play consistently to try and unlock the door.

“I don’t think we did that as well as we could have.”

The head coach was more encouraged by the Bees' second-half display.

“I thought there were more positive actions, a bit more intent to our play,” he added. “I think that helped us start the second half, get more pressure on the ball, and got us further up the pitch more consistently.

“But we still need to do better.”

Kayode: We have to be better

Reaction: Michael Kayode on Hull Draw

Michael Kayode admitted Brentford needed to improve after coming from behind to earn a point at MKM Stadium.

“We start to play and react when we concede the goal, so I think obviously we have to be better,” said Kayode.

“We wanted to win the game, but it wasn’t easy because the opposition were good as well. We just need to work and improve ourselves.”

The defender was pleased to see Dango Ouattara get on the scoresheet: “I’m really, really happy for him. I think he played a really good game, so just keep going like this.”

Kayode also thanked the travelling support after a difficult afternoon of wind and rain.

“I couldn’t believe, honestly, that there were really a lot [of fans]. I was so, so happy. Thank you to all the fans and for the support, as always.”
