Brentford Women secured an important away win on Sunday, beating Newhaven 5-1 in the London and South East Premier.

Marta Boabonay scored a first-half brace on the south coast, while assisting Chelsie Berry’s goal. In the second half, goals by Freya Worsley and Cloe O’Brien ensured the Bees took home all three points.

Carly Williams’ side started brightly away from home and it was Asees Sangha who was on the attack early. Beating her opponent down the left side, the midfielder crossed to Maï Louvrier in the middle of the box, but her shot sailed wide.

The visitors' best early chance came on seven minutes as Alissa Down sent in a dangerous corner. The ball fell to defender Makeba Black near the back post and she sent the ball goalward, cannoning it off the bar before being cleared by Newhaven.

Two minutes later, it was Sangha trying to run onto the ball for a scoring chance, but she was beaten to the ball by Newhaven goalkeeper Elleah Fenner, who slid in to secure it just in time.

Williams’ side were full of run and came close to an opener through Boabonay on 18 minutes. O’Brien played a neat ball through the back line from the middle of the pitch, Boabonay taking possession into the box but putting the shot wide.

O’Brien became the shooter soon after as she launched a powerful strike at goal from long-range, however, it sailed over the bar.

Three minutes later, the stranglehold was broken through Boabonay. Renai McCrea put a superb cross in from the left side of the box, with Boabonay meeting the ball at the back post and heading it home from close range.

With the lead secured, the Bees eyed a second - they had to wait until 38 minutes to get it. After Sangha’s initial shot was saved, McCrea put another superb cross in, with the ball falling nicely off the pack to Boabonay who smashed it home from the centre of the box.

On 40 minutes, substitute Berry was immediately in the game as she made a strong run down the right side. Her cross found McCrea in the box, but her powerful header was kept out by Fenner.

Just a minute later, it was Berry receiving the ball in the box, this time from Down’s cross. The Brentford winger shot with her first touch, however, it was again kept out by Fenner.

The hosts' defence was broken again in added time and the third goal was scored by Berry. Boabonay’s cross from the right side was pinpoint, with Berry there to tap it home from close range.

After half-time, Newhaven started with intent and were rewarded inside three minutes. Charlie Carter-Collinson stepped up to take a long-range free-kick, with her strike hitting the bar and bouncing in to make it 3-1.

Williams’ side responded immediately through Worsley. Ilana Harris-Walters made a brilliant individual run down the right side, beating her defender before crossing it centrally. Boabonay looked to take possession but was interrupted, with the ball continuing through to Worsley, who smashed it home to restore the three-goal lead.

As the clock ticked over 60 minutes, it was Berry who looked destined to score her brace as she created room inside the box, but her shot smashed into the bar.

Searching for her hat-trick, Boabonay came close on 66 minutes as she met Berry’s cross in the middle of the box, however, her glancing header faded right of the goal.

With fresh legs, substitute Ashley Cheatley looked to have an immediate impact in her return to the side as she made a superb run into the box. Her shot was kept out by Fenner, with the rebound falling to O’Brien, but her effort smashed into the bar before being cleared.

Inside the last 10 minutes, the Bees got their fifth. Maddie Phillips’ free-kick from the left side curled neatly towards the bottom-left corner, but was kept out; however, O’Brien was there to tap home the rebound.

The Bees now turn their attention to the Capital Cup, with Dorking Wanderers next up at Bedfont Sports Club.

Williams: A great performance and win

Brentford Women head coach Carly Williams discussed Sunday's LSE Premier win over Newhaven, praising her side for the impressive performance.

"For us, we came here aiming for the three points, so the performance - especially the first half - was fantastic," she said. "It was a great performance and good to come away with the win.

"The team loves to travel, we liked the travel here last time so, to come back here, it wasn't an unknown venue, which is always good.

"In terms of creating those big chances and finishing those big chances, the goalkeeper made a few fantastic saves but, in terms of us finishing, it was fantastic.

"[Boabonay] is another success story of the club in terms of getting minutes from the B team... today she got her first start, she's developing well, she's integrating really well with the squad, and it's great to see."
