Brentford Under-21s defender Josh Stephenson says the side are relishing another challenge as they prepare for Tuesday afternoon’s Professional Development League clash with Millwall at Wheatsheaf Park.

Sam Saunders’ side head into the fixture in strong form, having recorded back-to-back victories most recently cruising to a 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in a west London derby last week.

Speaking ahead of the game, Stephenson highlighted the confidence within the group and the progress the team have made as the season has developed.

“We’re learning so much as a team this season,” said Stephenson. “There’s a lot of confidence in the group at the moment and you can feel that in the way we’re playing.

“We’re growing all the time. Every game, every week, we’re learning more about each other and improving as a team.

“The style hasn’t changed, but a lot of the players have, so we’ve done really well to still be consistent. That shows the strength of the group and how well everyone has adapted.”

Saunders’ side has seen movement in recent weeks, with Iwan Morgan joining Shrewsbury Town and Michael Olakigbe moving to Swindon Town on loan for the remainder of the season.

Stephenson feels those changes have been handled well by the squad.

“That’s part of football and part of this level,” he added. “It gives opportunities to other lads, and everyone’s stepped up. We’re still pushing each other every day.”

Tuesday’s fixture also carries extra significance for Stephenson, who joined Brentford from Millwall in November 2024, and he is looking forward to the contest.

“It’s always nice to play Millwall,” he said. “It’s a game you look forward to and one you want to be involved in. We know it’ll be tough, but we’re excited for it.”
