Practice made perfect for Adam Forshaw as he opened his account for the 2013/14 season with the first goal in Brentford’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United.
The midfield man said he wanted to add more goals to his game after scoring three in 53 games in 2012/13.
He started in the best possible way in the new season when he curled in a shot from 20 yards against United.
He praised Jake Bidwell for a run that created space and said his work on the training pitch had paid off.
“I have been practicing a lot,” said Adam, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“I have been taking more shots in training and taking more shots in games.
“Jake made a run that took the right back away, made some space.
“I had a shot and luckily enough it went in.
“When I get in space my first thought is ‘Can I go for goal?’ or ‘Can I put somebody in?’.
“When Jake made the run my first thought was to get the shot off and hit the target.
“I won’t talk about my targets but I do want to score more than I did last year.
“That is something I am working towards.
“Hopefully I can get another one next week, we win and we go from there.”
Adam’s goal gave Brentford a half time lead but Sheffield United equalised from a corner early in the second period.
Brentford got the win, their first of the Sky Bet League One season, when Will Grigg scored twice.
Adam said United were playing very differently to last season but he relished when teams came to Griffin Park to try and play.
“They got an equaliser and then we got a second and we didn’t know where the game would go from there,” said the midfield man.
“When we got the third goal it let us breathe.
“Overall I thought we did really well.
“We stuck to our game plan.
“We knew they would try and play out from the back.
“We pressed them really well, forced mistakes and were clinical.
“Sheffield United were more direct last year.
“They went for a different outlook but we out shone them.
“We know we can pass the ball as well as anyone in the league.
“If they try and match us it makes it an open game.
“We always fancy ourselves with the creativity we have got.
“We have a lot of players that can create chances and score goals.”
Brentford started their season with a 1-1 draw away to Port Vale last week and beat Dagenham and Redbridge in the Capital One Cup First Round on Tuesday.
“I think it is a good steady start,” said Adam.
“We have four points from six, we’d have taken that, and we are still in the cup.
“We played some really good stuff so far.
“It’s really promising.”
