Will Grigg said he was pleased to mark his home debut with two goals in Brentford’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United.
The striker joined The Bees from Walsall when his contract expired in the summer and played his first competitive home game at Griffin Park against Sheffield United.
The game was poised at 1-1, the visitors having equalised Adam Forshaw’s opener, when Will took over.
He fired home when George Saville got away down the left and cut the ball back and then made the game safe when he tapped in after an Adam Forshaw shot was saved.
“I am pleased to get off the mark and pleased to score two on my home debut,” said the striker.
“For the first one George Saville did really well.
“He cut it back for me and it was a pretty simple finish.
“The second one was a nice little tap in.
“It’s all about timing the run.
“I gambled and it paid off.
“To be honest those are the sorts of goals I score.
“They were goal scorers’ goals.”
Will played as the central man of a front three with Clayton Donaldson on the right and Conor McAleny on the left.
He said it was a role he could play and one he had discussed with Manager Uwe Rösler before making the switch to Griffin Park.
“It is a tough role as the middle man of a front three,” he said.
“You have to be fit.
“It is a job I did a lot last year and I think I can do it well.
“If you have a team that plays football it is a really good formation.
“I think I can link the play up and work in behind.
“I think it is a formation that suits me and suits the team.
“When you are thinking about moving to a club you want to know what formation the manager wants to play.
“He discussed this with me.
“I think we have the players to play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.
“We played 4-3-3 today but we can change it up.
“We can mix it up.”
Will said Brentford produced a good performance overall against Sheffield United and praised the way his team dug deep after losing their lead early in the second half.
“I think it was good,” he said.
“We did well.
“We dominated the first 15 minutes and got the goal, which put us on the front foot.
“We went from there.
“We stepped off a bit in the second half and conceded a disappointing goal but it shows the desire to score two late on.
“No matter what game you play, the other team will always have a spell, especially a team like Sheffield United.
“They have tried to change their style this year; we pressed from the front and made it difficult for them.
“All credit to the lads, we dug deep, got the second goal and then the third.”
Will could have started his Griffin Park career with a hat-trick but saw a penalty he had won himself saved by United goalkeeper George Long.
“It was a good save,” said the striker.
“I should have scored; I know I should have scored.
“I felt confident I would score.
“Sometimes you miss.
“I changed my mind before the penalty and went the other side.
“It’s a bit frustrating but it is one of those things.”
Brentford kicked off their season with a 1-1 draw away to Port Vale last week and beat Dagenham and Redbridge in the Capital One Cup.
Will has been at Brentford for around a month and said it has been a “brilliant” start to his career in West London and a decent start to the season.
“It has been brilliant,” said the striker.
“I was thrown in the deep end and went straight over to Germany.
“That was a tough week, with the boot camp.
“The lads and staff are great.
“There is a great vibe around the place.
“We have had a decent start; it was a tough opener last week.
“It was nice to get the first win, especially at home.”
