Callum Wilson and Igor Thiago were on target as Brentford bowed out of the Carabao Cup at the fourth-round stage following a 3-2 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Bees twice struck the woodwork before goals from Chemsdine Talbi, Timur Tutierov and Malick Fofana put the hosts three up. Wilson reduced the deficit shortly before half-time and Thiago’s stoppage-time header set up a tense finish, but the west Londoners were unable to complete the comeback.

Head coach Keith Andrews made eight changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Hull City the previous weekend.

Captain Nathan Collins returned at the heart of defence, while Wilson joined Thiago and Jaidon Anthony in attack.

The first chance fell Sunderland’s way. Omar Alderete cushioned a diagonal ball into the path of Jules Ahoka on the edge of the box, but he dragged his effort well wide of Hákon Valdimarsson’s right post.

At the other end, Vitaly Janelt’s first-time cross found Collins unmarked at the back post, but his header was comfortably held by Melker Ellborg.

Thiago had a big opportunity to put Brentford ahead on 15 minutes. El Hadji Malick Diouf delivered a beautiful low cross from the left and the Brazilian was first to the ball but poked narrowly wide of the post.

Two minutes later, the Bees twice struck the woodwork. Jannik Schuster threw himself at Janelt’s in-swinging corner and sent a header crashing against the crossbar, before Michael Kayode hit the post with the follow-up.

Sunderland took the lead against the run of play on 26 minutes. Ahoka drove forward on the counter attack before Jocelin Ta Bi’s right-footed shot was tapped home on the goal line by Talbi.

Brentford almost responded straight after the restart. Anthony’s cross was only half cleared and Mikkel Damsgaard played a clever disguised pass into Wilson, whose shot bounced down into the turf and just over the crossbar.

The Black Cats doubled their lead on 29 minutes. Ta Bi beat Diouf on the right and pulled the ball back for Tutierov to convert from six yards.

Sunderland scored a third goal 10 minutes later. Tutierov raced onto a through ball and tried to round Valdimarsson but, left with a tight angle, rolled it back to Ta Bi on the right of the box. His cross was headed in by Fofana.

The Bees reduced the deficit on 42 minutes. Anthony looped a cross into the box from the byline and, after Janelt scuffed his shot, Wilson clinically fired in via the underside of the crossbar.

Wilson almost added a second before the break. Diouf headed the ball back across goal and the striker looked certain to tap in from close range, but Ellborg made a sprawling save to deny him.

Andrews shuffled his pack just before the hour mark, introducing Aaron Hickey, Mathias Jensen and Dango Ouattara in place of Kayode, Mamadou Sangaré and Wilson.

Janelt took aim from 25 yards on 62 minutes, forcing Ellborg into a full-stretch save to push his fierce effort behind for a corner.

Valdimarsson’s misplaced pass then presented Chris Rigg with a chance, but he delayed his shot and Collins got across to make a block.

On 76 minutes, Thiago worked tirelessly to win back possession deep in Sunderland territory. He laid the ball off to Schade, who quickly moved it on to Damsgaard, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked.

In the next phase of play, Damsgaard turned provider, teeing up Janelt in the centre of the box, but the German fired over the crossbar.

Brentford had two more chances in quick succession. Damsgaard saw another effort blocked after some neat footwork inside the Sunderland area, before Schade hooked the ball towards the back post. Thiago sent a looping header back across goal, but Luke O’Nien cleared off the line.

A minute later, Rigg cut in from the right flank and rolled a left-footed shot wide of the post.

Thiago set up a tense finish at the Stadium of Light, meeting Jensen’s wicked cross from the right with a glancing header that Ellborg could not keep out, but Sunderland stood firm during the closing stages to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Andrews: I’m bitterly disappointed

Keith Andrews was bitterly disappointed by Brentford’s Carabao Cup exit, with the head coach highlighting the defensive errors that proved costly at the Stadium of Light.

“We wanted to progress in this competition,” he said. “We’ve taken it very, very seriously in the way we’ve approached it.

“If we break down the performance, there’s a lot of good to take from it. We created multiple opportunities and should have scored more than we actually have.

“But the reality is we had a period in the game when we conceded three goals, which has cost us. Poor defending, poor mistakes and judgement. We need to learn from it.”

Collins: We only have ourselves to blame

Nathan Collins was left frustrated by Brentford’s Carabao Cup exit, pointing to defensive shortcomings on a night when the Bees created enough chances to progress.

“Frustrated, annoyed,” the captain reflected.

“I felt we were in a good place to do well in the cup this year, but that performance let us down.

“We created our own problems. We didn’t defend well enough. We created enough chances to win a game, so we only have ourselves to blame.”
