Alfie Mawson said Brentford’s Development Squad did what they had to do to beat Millwall.
The Bees recorded a 2-0 Under-21 Professional Development League Two South victory over the South London side yesterday.
Brentford are challenging at the top of the division after taking 16 points from their last 18.
“It was very good,” said Alfie, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“It’s another step forward.
“I think we are top for a couple of hours.
“If you look at the table, the teams around us are Premier League and Championship sides.
“We are breaking the trend.
“We are doing well, playing good football.
“We did what we had to do today.
“We matched their fight and penetrated them when we had the ball.”
The Bees took the lead late in the first half when Emmanuel Oyeleke curled in a free kick.
Alfie played a key part in the second goal, lifting a ball forward for Luke Norris to head past the onrushing Millwall goalkeeper Tom Wellham and in to the net.
“Our first goal was sheer quality,” said Alfie.
“Both times we scored they were getting in to their stride.
“In the second half we got a foothold and did just enough.
“I saw Luke’s run for the second goal and was happy with it.
“I could have scored four myself.
“As a team we did very well.”
Alfie was named as a substitute for Brentford’s game against Ipswich Town last week and said there was real competition for places in the team.
The central defender travelled with the First Team on the pre-season tour to Germany but picked up an injury close to the start of the regular season.
“If you don’t do well enough on the pitch, you won’t play,” said Alfie.
“There is great competition for places.
“It can be a kick up the backside.
“It keeps everyone focussed.
“I was going really well in pre-season and then got an injury.
“I came back and wasn't playing well so I was left out.
“You know there is competition in training and further competition to train with the First Team.
“That helps focus your mind.”
