Brentford match winner Paul Hayes said he could claim both goals in the 2-1 win against Carlisle United.
Paul scored Brentford’s second when he turned home a Clayton Donaldson knock down from a Harry Forrester corner.
Speaking to Bees Player after the win, the striker said the first goal, when Jonathan Douglas volleyed home another Harry Forrester flag kick, also could have been given to him.
“The first one has hit me on the way in,” he explained.
“I can’t take it away from Dougie though.
“It would be harsh of me to take it off him, it was a great volley.
“As a striker, if it hits you and it goes in, you want the goal.
“He said I could have it at first, but when I scored the second one he said he wanted it back.
“It’s up to him.
“The second hit my other foot and went in.
“But a goal is a goal.
“A lot of goals are like that, a reaction to the ball, turn and get the shot away.
“The corner came over, it was headed down and it was a quick reaction.”
Paul said Brentford were sloppy in the first half but much improved in the second.
He said to get the second goal on the hour mark after starting the second period well was very important.
“The first half was a bit sloppy,” said Paul.
“We didn’t come out of the traps quickly enough.
“It was a bit disheartening, we normally start games well.
“We had words at half time and came out in the second half looking to play in their half and create more.
“To get the second goal when we were on the front foot was massive.”
Brentford made a tactical change at the break, switching from a 4-4-2 system to a 4-2-3-1.
Paul said it was important to match the visitors up in midfield and the squad was good enough to cope with the change.
The Bees have now won four of their last five games in all competitions and Paul said they needed to keep winning while they were in form.
“Teams will come here and play 4-5-1,” said the striker.
“That means there won’t be a lot of room to create.
“We matched them up in the second half and it worked in our favour.
“We might have done the same if we had not changed but we had to match them.
“We have good players who can adapt.
“It’s going to be tough to get out of this league but we know the quality we have.
“We are on a good run of form.
“We are playing well, we are scoring more goals, conceding fewer and winning games.
“We have to take advantage.
“This is a massive month for us.”
