Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said he had an “extremely busy” end to the transfer window.
The Bees signed two players on deadline day – French Under-20 international defender Raphaël Calvet joined from AJ Auxerre for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal and Marcello Trotta arrived from Fulham on loan until January 5 – while other deals fell through.
Uwe said recent injuries to Conor McAleny, who returned to Everton after breaking his leg, and Jake Bidwell meant he needed to get players in.
He added more would arrive when the Club could sign players on loan next week.
“It has been extremely busy,” said Uwe.
“The last two days have been extremely busy on the phone.
“Circumstances, with injuries, dictated we wanted to be active.
“We got players in.”
Uwe said Raphaël, who is currently away with the France Under-20 squad, was a player for the future and would not immediately go in to the First Team for Saturday’s Sky Bet League One match against Bradford City.
But he said he had trained well with the Club last week and had the potential to go to the top.
“Raphaël is a French Under-20 international,” said Uwe.
“He is a versatile defender.
“He is a man for the future, not next weekend at Bradford.
“This was the right player, the right opportunity at the right price.
“I am looking forward to working with a talented and ambitious player.
“We tested him in three days of training and studied DVDs.
“He is promising.
“He is well-skilled and well-drilled, he has the possibility to make it to the top in English football.
“He fulfils everything we look for.
“He is talented and ambitious and the price was right.”
Marcello is at Brentford for the second time, having scored nine goals in 29 games while on loan in 2012/13.
Uwe said he was very, very pleased to have got him back and praised his impact last season.
The striker hit the crossbar with a stoppage time penalty against Doncaster Rovers on the last day of last season when a goal would have given The Bees automatic promotion.
Uwe said he only thought of the good things concerning Marcello and called on Bees fans to back the striker.
He said Marcello gave him something that other strikers Clayton Donaldson, Will Grigg and Farid El Alagui did not and would have been useful when The Bees couldn’t break down Carlisle United in a 0-0 Sky Bet League One draw on Saturday.
“I am very, very pleased,” said the Brentford Manager.
“It is human nature to think the glass is half empty and remember the things that didn’t work out.
“I remember that Marcello joined us on November 24 last year, we then went unbeaten in ten games, we won seven, he played every game.
“That was due to him coming at the right time and giving us a lift.
“He is still very young and learned a lot from last year.
“The mental strength he showed to come back from what happened against Doncaster and play like he did against Swindon [Town in the Play-Offs], that was fantastic.
“That is the quality we need.
“This season will be tough and we need players with strong nerves.
“He offers qualities that are different from Clayton, Will, Farid.
“He is a proven goal scorer and I am happy to have him.
“He gives us goals and physical presence and is well liked in the camp.
“He knows the way we play and the players know him.
“I want everybody, supporters, the media, people who follow us, that they give him a fair chance.
“He deserves it.
“We are fortunate to have him, he has the potential to get better.
“He would have been perfect for us in a game like Carlisle, when you need technique in the box and to find half a yard to pull the trigger.”
Football League clubs are allowed to sign players on loan – for a maximum of 93 days each under the ‘emergency loan rule’ from next week – and Uwe said that would be happening.
He added the Club would not rush in to getting a player for the sake of it.
“We have been very active and things don’t always pay off,” he said.
“A lot of people invested a lot of energy in the past two or three weeks.
“We studied two players we went for in the past weeks since June and it came down to last night.
“We have done a medical with one and had an agreement of personal terms with another.
“Then the club changed their mind.
“You can’t control everything.
“We need to bring in a loan player but won’t panic to bring in someone for the next game.
“We need to think of the bigger picture and for the rest of the season.
“Hopefully we will get the right one.
“We will definitely look at the loan market for one position and there will be players loaned out when the loan window opens.”
