Brentford FC Sporting Director Mark Warburton said the business done at Griffin Park on transfer deadline day was all in the best interest of the Club.
The Bees brought in two players before the transfer window closed at 11pm yesterday, Monday September 2.
French Under-20 international defender Raphaël Calvet joined from AJ Auxerre for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.
And Marcello Trotta arrived from Fulham on loan until January 5.
Mark told Bees Player last night that the last few days of the transfer window had been frustrating and deals for players had fallen through.
But he said the Club would not pay over the odds and the completed transfers were right for Brentford FC.
“It has been frustrating at times,” said Mark last night.
“A lot of work has gone in over the past few weeks to secure targets, both domestic and from overseas.
“We had a couple fall at the final hurdle, literally.
“We had our medical team overseas over the weekend, the medical was complete, but unfortunately it is part and parcel that hiccoughs suddenly appear.
“The price on any deal has to be right for the Club.
“The value has to be right.
“Deals fell through but we did the right thing for the Club.
“We have a couple coming in, which we are very pleased about, and the loan window reopens in seven days.
“We will use that as and when.”
Football League clubs are allowed to sign players on loan – for a maximum of 93 days each under the ‘emergency loan rule’ from next week – and Mark said that would be happening.
“We know where we need to strengthen and a lot of work has been done,” he said.
“I look at this in a bemused manner.
“This is like Valentine’s Day.
“Roses are £5 a bunch, they are £25 on the day and tomorrow they will be £5 a bunch again.
“That is what we are seeing now.
“We will not break our wage structure.
“We won’t smash it in a panic move.
“We would like to add one or two more but we won’t play two or three times over the top for a player that we know will be a different price tomorrow.”
Mark said he was pleased to get the two players in yesterday.
He described Raphaël, who is currently with the France Under-20 squad, as a player with good technical ability and a desire to impress.
“Raphaël is very highly thought of, he has played 40 games for his country at various levels,” said Mark.
“He was originally a ball-playing midfield player but dropped back to play at centre back or right back.
“He trained last week and impressed Uwe and the staff with his tenacity, positioning, technical ability and desire to impress.
“He caught the eye; we have had good reports from within France.
“Bringing in players from overseas is more complicated.
“In this case we hope it will work out very well.
“He is mature and intelligent.
“He is away with the French squad now and then comes back here.”
He said Marcello Trotta would complement the players already at the Club.
The striker was at Brentford last season and scored nine goals in 29 games in all competitions.
He hit the crossbar with a penalty in stoppage time on the final day of the 2012/13 season against Doncaster Rovers when a goal would have given The Bees automatic promotion.
Mark hailed his courage for stepping up on that day and said no-one within the Club had it in their minds.
“We have to look for players that complement what we have got,” he said.
“We looked to buy a player like Marcello from overseas and it fell at the final hurdle.
“Marcello is a player that creates half a yard in the box, he links play well and has an excellent goal scoring record.
“He ticks a number of boxes.
“This is a boy we know, the squad knows him and the fans know him.
“Last year he showed tremendous courage and character.
“We are delighted to welcome him back on a loan basis; we will see how he does and see if we can extend it.”
Mark said the Club had certain players in mind when the loan window re-opened next week.
He said only players who wanted to come to Griffin Park and be part of Brentford’s vision would be brought in, not those looking for a pay day.
“We will go in to the loan market,” he said.
“We know what we need to do.
“There is a certain type of player we are looking for.
“There are players at higher levels looking for moves at the last minute to The Championship or Premier League.
“If that doesn’t happen they become loan options.
“We are a League One club and that is old Division Three.
“We want players who want to be here and buy in to our vision.”
