Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said he was happy his side took a point from their away match against Gillingham but admitted he was disappointed with their performance.
Farid El Alagui came off the substitute’s bench to score a stoppage time equaliser to extend Brentford’s unbeaten start to the season.
The Bees had fallen behind in a first half they dominated and hit the post twice in a second half that Uwe said wasn’t as good.
Uwe, speaking after the match, said – like many games during the previous 2012/13 campaign – his team had to put more of their chances away and not concede “soft” goals at the other end.
“I am happy to get a point,” said the Brentford Manager.
“When you get it in added time there is always an element of luck.
“Overall, it was not lucky, we had 20 attempts, nine on target, hit the post twice.
“Overall I am disappointed with our performance.
“We are talking about the same things we talked about last year.
“We are not converting our good play in to enough goals.
“We had good chances today.
“And, the opposition seldom come in to our box but when they do they score a goal.
“We looked comfortable and controlled the game.
“I felt just before their goal the gaps were opening, we were playing some good through balls.
“We were making them feel uncomfortable on their pitch but then we conceded a goal.
“It was a soft goal, we will analyse it.”
Uwe said he was not worried about a lack of goals and would be more concerned if his side weren’t creating chances.
He said his players could produce better performances and called for more leadership and patience in the way they chased a game.
Uwe said Brentford played in to Gillingham’s hands too often with direct balls in the second period.
“We knew in the second half how we wanted to play when Farid El Alagui came on,” said Uwe.
“But we tried to play combination football through the middle rather than getting it wide.
“We played to their strengths.
“I am not worried; I would be worried if we were not creating chances.
“I can see our potential; we will keep working on the training ground.
“The players are getting better and more experienced and we will score goals.
“I will take a point; it is good to come back and good to get a late goal.
“We are dominating in terms of chances and everyone knows we can play better.
“There was a little bit of leadership missing on the field in the second half, players to keep us playing.
“We went too long, became erratic and tried to chase the game in the wrong way.
“I wanted us to continue until the last five minutes and then go long.
“We have to continue to work on it because we are not the finished article.”
Brentford’s goal came in the 94th minute when Adam Forshaw chipped a free kick in to the left channel, Harlee Dean headed across and Farid El Alagui bounced a shot in.
Uwe praised the players for their improvisation and said he was happy for the goal scorer, who now has three in three substitute appearances after missing most of last season with a serious knee injury.
“It was great improvisation,” said Uwe, talking about the goal.
“We have not trained on that, it was great to see.
“That is Farid’s strength.
“He will offer something that sometimes we will desperately need.
“I am happy for him.
“He has scored three in three games now, his confidence will grow.”
Brentford had to make an early change when Jake Bidwell was taken off.
Uwe said it was too early to tell how the left back was and he will undergo an x-ray and a scan to assess the injury.
The Bees are next in action next Saturday when Walsall visit Griffin Park.
“Walsall haver a counter-attack team,” said Uwe.
“They are dangerous, with a fluid front four and two sitting players.
“We have to play at our tempo in our way.
“It should be an entertaining game.
“I invite everyone to Griffin Park to watch it.”
