Uwe Rösler said the last seven days had been his best as Brentford Manager.
The Bees beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Griffin Park after picking up four points from two away games earlier in the week – drawing 1-1 at Preston North End and beating Swindon Town 1-0 in Wiltshire.
Uwe said he thought getting seven points from those three games was unrealistic before they started as his side had lost Kevin O’Connor, Farid El Alagui, Leon Legge and Tom Adeyemi to injury recently and brought in young loan players Rob Kiernan, Marcello Trotta and Lee Hodson to cover.
The Bees went 2-0 up against Sheffield United in a first half they dominated as Clayton Donaldson and Harry Forrester scored.
United came back in to the game in the second half but Brentford held firm and Uwe was full of praise for his young team.
“A week ago, if you had asked me if we could get seven points, I would have said it was a dream, not realistic,” said Uwe, speaking after the match.
“Particularly with the injuries we have had and the number of new players we have had to integrate in a short period of time.
“This has been the best week since I have been at Brentford.
“We have played three top teams; today we played the best team in the league.
“We played unbelievably in the first half.
“We got a little bit tired in the second half.
“It is normal that would happen, we have three new players in from the start and the players have not played at that level.
“Our average age today was 22 and a half.
“I think we are the youngest team in the league.
“I have so much respect for my players, what they have shown today, and all week.”
Experienced midfield player Jonathan Douglas missed the match through suspension and Uwe used Rob Kiernan as a defensive midfield player.
He said he did a fantastic job.
“We were a small team today,” said the Brentford Manager.
“We had to find a way to bring some physicality in to the team.
“We had to decide whether to go three at the back or play someone in front of the back four.
“We went with Rob Kiernan in front of the back four and he did a fantastic job.
“He was out of position; he had not played in midfield before.
“It was unbelievable.”
Sheffield United came back in to the game in the second half but could not get past Brentford goalkeeper Simon Moore.
“Simon Moore, particularly in the second half, when they put pressure on with set pieces, was unbelievable,” said Uwe.
“I think it was his best game since I have been with him.
“He was unbeatable today.
“Sheffield United are the best team in the league, they tried very hard in the second half.
“They got chances with set pieces but there was heroic defending from everybody, especially Simon Moore.”
Uwe added: “I am absolutely delighted.
“I am speechless with how we played.
“We had two players [Lee Hodson and Marcello Trotta] who had only trained with us for two days.
“It was fantastic.
“The second goal was vital but I felt the third was needed too.
“This is by far the best week since I have been here.”
