Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said his team deserved to beat Oldham Athletic but the last five minutes almost gave him a heart attack.
The Bees picked up their third straight home win by beating The Latics 1-0 at Griffin Park.
Adam Forshaw scored in the only goal in the first half and Brentford had to withstand an aerial bombardment late on after Oldham brought on giant striker Matt Smith.
Uwe, speaking to the press after the match, said his side were not killing teams off and had to be more clinical but were certainly better than their visitors.
“I was close to a heart attack in the last five minutes,” he said.
“We allowed them far too many long balls in to our box and we defended heroically for the last five minutes.
“Overall we were the much better team, we had far more chances than them, but we are not killing games off, that is our problem.
“We had 15 shots on goal today.
“In this league, when you don’t get the second goal, especially against a team like Oldham who have someone on the bench that means they can change their plan and go long, you will struggle.
“And you will be pushed back.
“Our goalkeeper [Simon Moore] was phenomenal.
“We deserved the three points overall.
“But when you look at the way we were under the cosh in the final five minutes, you can say we had a bit of luck.
“It is important to look at the positive side.
“Sometimes when the last five minutes are not as good as you hope it can overshadow the other 85.
“Overall I’m very happy with the number of chances we created.
“There were lots of good things but room for improvement too.
“We have to be more clinical.”
Uwe said his team didn’t start well but were not helped by Oldham striker Robbie Simpson being allowed to rough up the Brentford defence.
He said he was pleased for Adam Forshaw after the midfield scored his first professional goal – picking up a Farid El Alagui lay off and slotting home.
He paid tribute to his defence and goalkeeper for the way they kept out Oldham in the final stages.
“Oldham are an attacking side,” said Uwe.
“Credit to [Oldham Manager] Paul Dickov, he created a team that plays attacking football.
“They won’t go somewhere, sit back and go for a point.
“We didn’t start well, we didn’t get close enough but they were also allowed to have Robbie Simpson using his elbows against our defenders.
“They picked up many second balls in the first 20 minutes and that is where the danger came from.
“We got the goal, out of nothing.
“I think it was 50/50 in the first half but at the start of the second half we were better.
“We had clear cut chances in both halves but when you don’t use opportunities and play against teams that can bring on players that are good in the air, you will struggle.
“We are not clinical.
“The strikers, especially Clayton Donaldson, cannot complain about service, they get good chances.
“But sometimes, things are not going in and we have to make sure we do a defensive job.
“We got a clean sheet and, especially with the way they bombarded us in the last five minutes, all credit to the boys and especially [Simon Moore] for a match winning save.
“We scored a good goal.
“We need goals from midfield to take the pressure off the strikers.
“Adam is a very stable performer and I’m very happy for him.”
Brentford’s next game is against League One leaders Tranmere Rovers next Saturday.
Uwe said it was a test he was looking forward to but said he may “freshen up” his team for the game.
“We have a spell of three homes games and one away game, starting today,” said Uwe.
“If we come well out of that period we will be where we want to be.
“We got three points today and that releases the pressure a bit when we got to Tranmere.
“I think against Tranmere we may have one or two ideas how to address the game.
“Maybe it is also time to freshen things up.
“It will be a test but I like tests like this.
“It is better to play Tranmere away from home, the league leaders, than Oldham at home, when everyone expects you to win with a number of goals.”
