Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler called on his players to be more “ruthless, cynical and aggressive” in the later stages of away games.
The Bees looked set for their first away win of the 2012/13 season when they were 1-0 up against Doncaster Rovers with 15 minutes to go.
But David Cotterill smashed in a shot from 30 yards to cancel out Jonathan Douglas’ first half goal and Billy Paynter headed a late winner for the home side.
Uwe said his players had to deal with the later stages of games when teams started throwing bodies forward and stop being “nice”.
He said he wanted to stop getting praise after away games and start getting wins.
“We are too nice,” said Uwe, speaking after the match.
“We are too nice in those situations.
“Experienced players take advantage of us.
“We need to be more ruthless, cynical and aggressive in those situations.
“We are too nice.
“Every time we come away from home we get praise from the other manager.
“I’m sick and tired of it.
“I want some scrappy 1-0 wins.
“We have to work on certain things to make that happen.
“We have to show the players what they are doing well and work on what they aren’t.
“We can’t buy our way out of the division.
“We are happy with the squad we have but we have to get better results, especially away from home.
“In this league, when teams are a goal down, they have nothing to lose; they get more open, more direct.
“It is those situations we have to deal with it better.
“In the final ten to 15 minutes we have to continue to press and hold teams away from our goal.
“When the legs get tired, the ball comes in and around our box and things happen.
“We have to keep the ball but be ruthless and cynical when we need to be.”
Uwe said his team were “totally in control of the game” before Doncaster equalised.
He said his game plan – with Toumani Diagouraga sitting in front of the back four and Clayton Donaldson as a lone striker – worked well.
Uwe explained he took Jake Bidwell off as Doncaster were causing problems on Brentford’s left and the full back was tiring.
“We were totally in control of the game,” said Uwe.
“Their first goal came out of nothing, a long range shot, that can happen.
“We should have closed them down but sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition.
“It was a wonder goal and that is what they needed to get back in to the game.
“The second goal was a massive mistake.
“We have to take responsibility; we have to mark in the box.
“Harlee Dean didn’t do his job; it was as simple as that.
“At half time, when we were 1-0 up, I thought we would get more chances on the counter attack and we had to be good enough and clever enough to take them.
“We had chances, Clayton Donaldson was in on the keeper two times and we had other chances.
“We started a little slow but took control.
“We got the goal and had other chances.
“We looked defensively solid.
“Everything went to plan.
“We got problems on the left; Jake looked a little bit tired.
“With Jake and Harry [Forrester] on that side we had problems, that is why I made the change.
“Tony Craig stabilised it on that side.
“After that they didn’t have anything, they put the ball in behind us or up to us and challenged for the second ball.”
Uwe said new loan striker Jimmy Spencer, who joined from Huddersfield Town on Tuesday, was not quite ready as he had a chest infection but would feature soon.
The Bees welcome Coventry City to Griffin Park on Tuesday and Uwe said it was important Brentford beat The Sky Blues.
He added everyone in the camp was disappointed and had to pick themselves up before Tuesday.
“Jimmy had a chest infection today,” said Uwe.
“We saw in training this week that today’s game may have been a bit too early for him.
“We have two home games this week and he will be involved in those.
“Everybody is massively disappointed at the moment.
“We have to pick ourselves up for Tuesday.
“We are putting pressure on ourselves to win home games.
“As long as we win our homes games we will be alright but psychologically, the pressure mounts.
“We have to make sure we get more points away from home.
“We are strong at home.
“We are looking forward to continuing that but sometimes things will not go our way.
“But, with our ambitions, we are not getting enough points away from home.
“We need a win on Tuesday to keep ourselves at the top.”
