Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler was angered by a mistake from an assistant referee that cost his team a place in the FA Cup with Budweiser Fourth Round.
The Bees drew 2-2 with Southend United in a Third Round tie in Essex.
The home team came back from 2-0 down thanks to two Barry Corr goals after Tom Adeyemi and a Ryan Cresswell own goal had given The Bees the advantage.
But Uwe was seething as Southend’s second goal was headed in by striker Corr when he was “two metres” offside.
Assistant referee Mathew Bounassisi – who in recent Brentford games has ruled out a Paul Hayes goal against Shrewsbury Town when the striker was onside and tried to disallow a goal from Toumani Diagouraga in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Charlton Athletic when the ball was played by a defender – deemed the striker was onside and the goal stood.
The team will now meet again in a Third Round Replay at Griffin Park, a tie provisionally scheduled for January 15.
“I am going to see the referee,” said Uwe, speaking after the final whistle.
“I am not allowed to speak to him for 30 minutes.
“I don’t think it is good enough that the linesman just says ‘sorry’.
“This is an extra game for us in our schedule.
“There is too much at stake.”
Uwe said his team took a two goal lead slightly against the run of play and praised the quality of the hosts.
He said Southend’s two strikers – Barry Corr and Gavin Tomlin – caused his team problems and Brentford did not pick up enough second balls in the first half.
He said they were better after the break and had control against a tiring Southend before the key decision.
“I felt the first half was interesting for those watching,” said Uwe.
“We went 2-0 up but they were very good.
“They have a very skilled way of playing, it is not just kicking it long, there is a lot of organisation.
“In the first half we didn’t deal well enough with it but a little bit against the run of play we were 2-0 up.
“We had some good interplay in midfield.
“I am a bit annoyed about the first goal they scored, we didn’t close the full back, we closed the central defender but left the right side open and they put the ball in.
“In the second half they tired earlier than us, we had more of the play, we got more control in midfield and we coped with the second balls.
“They were running out of steam.
“Unfortunately the linesman made that decision.
“We didn’t pick up second balls in the first half.
“The two strikers were a handful and Tomlin caused us all sorts of problems.
“We changed the shape in the second half, that helped us.
“We got more control, Adam Forshaw was more in the game, Jonathan Douglas picked up the second balls and Tom Adeyemi was very competitive throughout the game.
“We took over; unfortunately the goal was two metres offside.
“Jobs are at stake, there is a lot of income for the Club on the line.
“This is not a Micky Mouse competition, this is the FA Cup.
“We had a grip on the game in the second half.
“There was a threat with Tomlin up front, he could cause us problems, but we had control.
“Then the goal.”
Uwe brought on Harry Forrester and Marcello Trotta in the second half to try and win the game and then Jake Reeves later on.
“I expected more from [Harry Forrester and Marcello Trotta],” he said.
“I expect our players to come on and make an impact, at the moment the players coming on are not making enough of an impact.
“That has to change.
“In the second half we won more of our battles in midfield, that was positive.
“We were on top; we got more play in our half.
“I was hoping more impact from the players that come on but the linesman decided the tie.”
The teams will play again at Griffin Park to decide the tie.
The Third Round Replay has been provisionally scheduled for Tuesday January 15.
“We have to do it the hard way,” said Uwe.
“Southend are good.
“They play football that is not easy to cope with.
“Up front they have Tomlin, an excellent player.”
