Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said he was “absolutely delighted” with his team’s win over fellow promotion-chasers Milton Keynes Dons.
The visitors came to Griffin Park in third place in npower League One but Brentford climbed above them after beating them 3-2.
The visitors went ahead twice but Clayton Donaldson scored twice, including a last gasp winner, and Harry Forrester got one as Brentford took the points.
Uwe said he knew the best way to beat MK Dons was to attack them and his players had to be at their best to get the win.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the result and the performance,” said the Brentford Manager, speaking after the match.
“We knew we would have to be physically and mentally at our best today.
“We also knew we would have to be brave.
“The physical demands of the game today – the way we pressed them high up the field, I don’t think many teams would have been brave enough to do that against Milton Keynes Dons.
“I think many teams sit back and play to their strengths.
“They have a very good style of play; they are one of the best teams in the league.
“But I think a lot of teams show them too much respect and play in to their hands.
“Our best defence today was to attack.
“We pressured them for 90 minutes, we kept their main players quiet, we had a number of goal attempts and got in to the key areas more than them.
“We were careless on one or two occasions, that is why they scored goals.
“But I think we were the deserved winners.”
MK went ahead when they broke quickly after winning the ball in midfield and Ryan Lowe scored.
Uwe said he accepted that sort of thing would happen with his team trying to attack and was more upset with the second goal his team conceded, scored by Stephen Gleeson.
“The first goal came after a mistake with a pass but we wanted to attack,” said the Brentford boss.
“We needed good organisation and then attack in numbers.
“That is what we were trying to do when they scored.
“I was more concerned about the second goal.
“We have worked for 18 months on what to do when we defend throw-ins.
“That goal was easy to avoid.”
Uwe said his players believed in the game plan Brentford were attempting to execute and that is why they won the game.
The Bees set out to press MK’s defence with Clayton Donaldson, Adam Forshaw and Harry Forrester behind striker Marcello Trotta.
“We were in the game from the beginning,” said Uwe.
“The players were very confident.
“They believed in the game plan.
“We now have seven points from three games against MK Dons.
“We knew our set up would take the players to the limit but if they did it the reward would be high.
“That is why they never gave up.
“They always believed in how we wanted to achieve it and the result is three points.
“The players always had belief; we just conceded a silly second goal.
“I would have taken a point with how the game was.
“But the players had the confidence to push for three and I am even more happy with two more.”
Uwe said he felt Brentford’s extra fitness would tell in the end.
“MK Dons have a small squad but one that is high on quality,” said Uwe.
“They play the same way week in, week out with the same players and are one of the best teams in the league.
“At times I feel they play games when they are not at their physical peak.
“I felt we could put them under pressure.
“I felt the longer the game went on, we would overtake them and that is what happened.”
Uwe said his players should enjoy the win but remember there were still 25 npower League One games left to play, starting with a trip to Notts County, who are seventh in the table.
“The players have their Christmas party today,” said the Brentford Manager.
“I told them they have to enjoy themselves when we win games.
“They can have a beer and enjoy themselves but we have not won the league, we have won a game of football against a very good team, who took us to the max.
“Next week we play another top team and then we can show how far we have come away from home.
“This group of players is amazing.
“I am so proud to be their leader.
“They surprise me so many times, this team has no limits.”
