Jonathan Douglas described Brentford’s 3-2 victory over Milton Keynes Dons as a “massive win”.
The Bees came from behind twice to win with Clayton Donaldson scoring the winner inside the final two minutes.
Brentford started the day fifth with MK third and The Bees climbed in to the top four with the win.
Jonathan said The Bees needed to beat the teams around them in the table, which they had not done last year when they finished six points outside the League One Play-Off places.
“It is a massive win, especially beating one of your rivals at the top of the table,” said Jonathan, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“It is good for us.
“Last year we let ourselves down against the teams in and around us, we didn’t win too many.
“This was a big game and a big three points.
“MK Dons are a very good team, they play in the right way, they pass the ball but we knew that.
“We worked on stopping them from playing and we did that.
“We took them out of their comfort zone.
“It was a great win.”
Brentford fell behind twice but Clayton Donaldson equalised in the first half and Harry Forrester did so in the second.
Clayton Donaldson scored the winner when he followed up after a Marcello Trotta shot had been saved.
Jonathan said the win was a team effort and said everyone at the Club – players, staff and supporters – would play an important part in the season.
“We didn’t want to give them a head start but we showed good character to come back,” he said.
“It was great to score so late, a great buzz.
“We have players on fire at the moment – Harry and Clayton – and Marcello was different class up front.
“His hold up play was great, we could gamble, get up and support.
“It was a team performance.
“It has been about the team all season and that will continue.
“We have shown the character we have all season with the late goals we have scored.
“We have come from behind to get points and win games.
“It’s brilliant and we have to keep going.
“We play attacking football and score goals.
“Everybody is gelling, the players and staff and the fans are a big part of it too.
“It was great to play in front of a loud crowd today.”
Jonathan returned to the Brentford team after missing three games, including the npower League One win over Sheffield United, the first league game he had missed since he signed for the Club in the summer of 2011.
Jonathan missed the Sheffield United game through suspension but said he also had a slight groin problem, which needed rest.
“I had an issue with my groin,” he said.
“It probably came at a good time because I was suspended as well.
“I had to rest that.
“It’s good to be back and it’s what I enjoy doing.”
