Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said he was delighted with his team’s second half performance in their FA Cup with Budweiser win over Boreham Wood.
The Bees knocked the Blue Square Bet South team out of the competition as they won 2-0 at Meadow Park.
Uwe paid tribute to the non-league side after the match and said they caused his team problems in the first half.
But he was full of praise for the way his side played; doing what was required to ensure progress.
Clayton Donaldson opened the scoring for The Bees and Harry Forrester grabbed the second as Brentford booked a place in the Second Round draw.
“I was, in many ways, happy with the first half, particularly our offensive play, we created a number of chances,” said Uwe, speaking after the win.
“We had chances to score more than two goals.
“I have to be fair – Boreham Wood created a number of chances as well and Richard Lee, who has not played for a while, showed what a good keeper he is.
“They hit the bar but I think we should have had a penalty at the other end first, it was a clear handball.
“That would have been 3-0 at half time.
“You can see how tight football is.
“All credit to their team – in the first half they have what they had and caused us problems.
“In the second half, I was delighted with the way we played.
“That is the way to play these games, wear them out with passing, switch the play but go for the third goal.
“I was delighted with the clean sheet and a number of good performances.”
Uwe made three changes for the match, bringing Richard Lee, Kevin O’Connor and Leon Legge in to his defence.
He praised the experienced members of his team for helping inspire those around them and said the younger players would gain valuable knowledge from playing in such a game.
“They are at the top of their division – they are effectively a Conference team and the difference between Conference and League One is not that great, especially in the FA Cup,” said Uwe.
“I wanted to put out players that valued the FA Cup and knew what to expect.
“We brought Richard Lee, Kevin O’Connor and Leon Legge in.
“They are a good side, the first half was like a League One game.
“We had to be at our max in the first half.
“The second half was delightful.
“You saw what Kevin O’Connor brings to the team.
“Richard Lee was a match winner.
“They inspired the players around them.
“But also our young players – Jake Bidwell played his first FA Cup game, he will have learned a lot, he will know what to expect next time.”
Uwe said he expected Boreham Wood to start quickly but admitted he was forced to change the shape of his team to deal with them.
“I thought they would come at us hard,” he said.
“I didn’t expect the problems we had on our left and we solved that by switching Adam Forshaw and Harry Forrester.
“Jake Bidwell got more protection and Harry was just as effective on the right.
“They played very long and the referee gave them a lot of 50/50 calls.”
Brentford will find out their Second Round opponents later today.
“We take it as it comes,” said Uwe.
“I hope we get a home tie.
“We know we have to overcome the next round to get a big fish.”
