Sam Saunders said he was “thoroughly enjoying” his run in the Brentford team.
The attacking midfield player had been largely used as a substitute for the past few months but came off the bench to set up the winner as The Bees beat Oldham Athletic earlier this month, the first match in charge for new Brentford Manager Mark Warburton.
He again came on as a substitute against Preston North End just before Christmas, in the first half when Kadeem Harris picked up an injury, and scored the third goal in a 3-0 win.
He started in the Boxing Day match against Swindon Town and scored before scoring one and making one in Sunday’s win over Milton Keynes Dons.
He was named Man of the Match after the 3-1 win.
Sam, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live after the game, said he was delighted to be playing.
“It was nice to be named Man of the Match,” he said.
“It is nice to be back playing.
“I am thoroughly enjoying being back in the mix with the boys and continuing the run of form.
“I am just delighted to be involved.”
Brentford took the lead early on against MK when Clayton Donaldson smashed home.
They had chances to make the game safe in the first half but had to wait until after the break for more goals.
Sam set up the second for Marcello Trotta and then scored the third himself.
MK came back in to the game and reduced the arrears but Brentford did enough.
Sam admitted there were tired legs but praised the work rate of his team mates.
He said new Brentford Manager Mark Warburton had shown he trusted him when he was First Team Coach to Nicky Forster in 2010 and he felt he was a crucial part of the squad.
“MK are a good team,” said Sam.
“They pass the ball well.
“I am absolutely exhausted and it was a real graft from all the boys, we had to dig in.
“We had heavy legs from Boxing Day but we worked hard.
“We probably got a bit too deep and allowed them to play but that happens sometimes.
“It was an entertaining game, we are scoring loads of goals and it is thoroughly enjoyable to be involved in.
“I have spent a lot of time on the bench and I am loving being involved again.
“I think I am doing well.
“I feel Mark Warburton trusts me, when he was coaching with Nicky Forster a few years ago I think I played some of my best football.
“He has played me when others haven’t.
“I love playing every week and feel I am a crucial part of it.”
Sam said he passed to Marcello Trotta for the second goal as he felt the striker was better placed.
Sam looked to be clear on goal when latching on to an Adam Forshaw pass but cut back when defenders recovered.
“You have to know your strengths and weaknesses,” said Sam.
“I felt I was waiting for the ball a bit but the centre half came across and I thought I should square it to Marcello.
“We wanted to get the goals and kill them off.
“It doesn’t matter who scored, we just want to get them.
“I don’t care if I don’t score again this season if we go up.
“We are taking games by the scruff of the neck at the moment, playing exciting football and scoring goals.
“It is fantastic to be a part of.
Sam did get his goal a few moments later, he picked up a Clayton Donaldson cross, cut inside MK right back Lee Hodson, formerly on loan at Brentford, and placed it in to the far corner.
It made it three in three games for the attacking midfield player.
“I wanted to hit it first time,” he said.
“It was bobbling and I didn’t feel quite comfortable hitting it first time.
“They showed me inside, Jake Bidwell was overlapping and maybe Lee Hodson didn’t want to get too tight.
“I had the shot and was delighted to see it going in.
“It is nice to be back in the goals and when I score I tend to go on a run.
“Hopefully I can continue it.”
Sam said he would do all he could to keep his First Team spot.
“I have waited a long time for this shirt,” he said.
“I sat there waiting for opportunities and at times I felt it might not come.
“It has come now and I don’t want to give anyone a chance to take the shirt off me.
“I will keep working as hard as I can to keep that.
“I am not 100 per cent match fit but I feel I have matured as a player and a person and now we are playing attacking football it suits me.
“Mark gives me freedom and hopefully there is more to come.”
