Ryan Woods got his first start since joining Brentford on transfer deadline day earlier this month. The 21-year-old was picked by new boss Lee Carsley, with Alan McCormack moving back to right-back to accommodate the former Shrewsbury Town midfielder.
“Obviously I’d like to have started it on a win but it wasn’t to be today,” said Ryan. “I think we really controlled the game for a long period of time. There was about 15 minutes where Birmingham maybe controlled it a little bit and that’s when they got the goal.
“We need to be more clinical as well, especially in the first 20 minutes of the game. I think we had a few chances and we could have definitely got a goal.”
He was thankful for the opportunity to make his first start, and lasted 87 minutes before being withdrawn.
“I’ve got to thank him for that,” said Ryan. “I’ve got to keep doing well and keep improving every single day in training and the performances will keep coming.”
Ryan made three substitute appearances before his first start and has now acclimatised to his new surroundings.
“I’m settling in really well,” said Ryan. “I think we’ve got a great group of lads here; I’m glad to have got my first start under my belt today and fingers crossed there are many more to come.
He also commented on the difference in level between League One and the Championship.
“You get punished a lot more in the Championship,” said Ryan. “I found that out in my first game against Leeds unfortunately. I’m really looking forward to getting more games now.
