Lee Carsley gave his reaction to the defeat to Birmingham City, the first match since his appointment on Monday in succession to Marinus Dijkhuizen.
“I thought in the first half we played well at times,” said Lee. “We tried to move the ball quickly in forward areas without really having that cutting edge. [In the] second half we had a good chance and didn’t really capitalise on the possession that we were having so we prone to the counter attack”
Carsley made two changes from the side that lost on Saturday to Sheffield Wednesday, one enforced due to James Tarkowski’s dismissal plus the preference of Ryan Woods in midfield with Alan McCormack switching to right-back in place of Josh Clarke.
“We thought Josh had done well when he’s been involved but I thought we needed a little bit of experience,” said Lee. “Obviously Ryan’s showed in training he’s a good player and can try and get us on the ball and thought it good to get him involved.”
Lee conceded that his team required more potency upfront.
“We need to be more of an attacking threat,” said Lee. “I didn’t think we had that today. I thought we controlled the game at times well but without that extra pass, go forward and get shots away and we were a little predictable at times.
“The lads have been through quite a lot the last couple of days, obviously with what’s gone on. At times they did what we were asking. We concede a goal and I’m stood on the side thinking we’ve got a good chance of getting one back here and maybe going on and winning it but confidence is quite low.”
