David Button said the Brentford squad were “delighted” with their win against Rotherham United yesterday but admitted there was room for improvement in their performance.
The Bees won 1-0 at Griffin Park with Stuart Dallas scoring the only goal early in the second half.
It ended a run of three straight defeats and David, speaking to Bees Player after the win, said the victory was all that mattered.
He said Brentford had played well in their last two games – against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton and Hove Albion – but lost and they preferred to be below their best and win.
“Everyone is delighted,” said David.
“We got three points, which was the main thing today.
“There are parts of our performance we can improve but in the last couple of games we have had the performance and not the result.
“We prefer it this way, the lads are happy with the win.
“In the first half we were a bit sluggish; there were difficult conditions out there today.
“Coming off the back of a few defeats, playing against the wind and against a team that wants to sit off, we didn’t play to our usual tempo.
“In the second half, especially after we scored, we were the only team in the game.
“It could and should have been more.”
David said a strong wind blowing from one end of the pitch to the other made life difficult for The Bees.
He said it allowed Rotherham to push them back in the first half and they couldn’t after the break when Brentford had that weather advantage.
“The wind was blowing from one end to the other,” explained David.
“It changed from half to half.
“It shouldn’t affect us because we like to get the ball down but they like to play long balls and they were able to pin us in first half, which they couldn’t do in the second half.
“It is tricky but we have all played in worse conditions and we have to deal with it.”
Brentford kept a clean sheet for the first time since a home win over Wolves at the end of November.
David said with Brentford’s attacking potential a clean sheet always gives them a great chance of winning, although their positive intent meant teams would get chances.
“It has been a few games since we had a clean sheet and we always set out for one,” said the goalkeeper.
“We are delighted and the more clean sheets we keep the more chance we have to win games with the attacking quality we have.
“Clean sheets are vital; we always look like we will score.
“We like to get forward so there is a lot of onus on the centre halves and me defensively.
“We like to force the opposition to defend.
“When we do get a clean sheet it is great because we know we are likely to score.”
David denied Matt Derbyshire and Richard Smallwood in one-one-one situations in the first half but his best save came towards the end of the match.
Paul Green headed powerfully from ten yards but David sprung to his right to keep it out.
“The save was the highlight, apart from the final whistle,” said the stopper.
“It was just a reaction.
“The timing of it made it better – 1-0 up, quite late on.
“It would have been unjust if they had scored.
“It is what I am there for.”
David said three defeats had not affected confidence because The Bees had played well.
He said they knew that if they maintained performances, wins would come.Daviud But
“I don't think there had been a loss of confidence,” said David.
“The performances had been there; we hadn’t had the luck or taken our chances.
“We never lost the belief in the way we play.
“We knew if we played like we had done we would win more than we lost.
“Today’s performance might not have been as good as before but we showed great character to come back from three defeats and grind out a 1-0 win.”
