Jake Reeves said his first Brentford goal was “overdue”.
The midfield player scored the second in a 5-0 FA Cup with Budweiser win over Staines Town yesterday afternoon.
The goal came in his 32nd game for The Bees – and he also played five for AFC Wimbledon last year without scoring.
He said to play and score in the FA Cup was a boyhood dream he had now achieved.
“It is good to get off the mark,” said Jake.
“It’s overdue.
“As a midfield player I want to score goals, I want to contribute.
“I am happy to get the goal.
“It was getting to me a bit, I have been getting closer.
“I got a chance and thankfully put it away.
“I called for the ball from Kadeem Harris on the edge of the box; I didn’t really think I’d get it.
“I did get it and then played it in to Marcello Trotta for the one-two, he gave it to me and I put it away.
“When you are growing up you watch the FA Cup, you want to play in it and you want to score in it.
“I have achieved that goal.”
Jake said Brentford produced a “very professional” performance against their opponents from the Skrill South.
Alan McCormack converted a penalty when Staines captain Lewis Ferrell inexplicably punched away a corner and Jake made it two later in the first half.
Kadeem Harris, Marcello Trotta and Clayton Donaldson scored Brentford’s other goals.
Jake said Brentford could have scored more and were mentally ready for the challenge.
“I thought we were very professional,” he said.
“The score line speaks for itself.
“We could have, and should have, scored more goals.
“We controlled the game well.
“We should win the game but it is not always the case, as we all know.
“We had to be ready mentally to ensure it didn’t happen to us.
“Over the past few years the Club has improved and we have won this game more easily than recent games against non-league sides.
“The boys were brilliant today and it all clicked.”
Jake said the Brentford players were satisfied with their afternoon’s work.
He said getting goals before half time took away any nerves.
“I should have had a couple more, I could have had a hat-trick,” he said.
“We are very satisfied.
“If we hadn’t scored early on they could have come in to the game.
“It is gets to half time or 70 minutes at 0-0 it starts to get edgy.
“We didn’t allow that to happen.
“The centre half did us a great favour for the penalty.
“It doesn’t matter what level you play, teams have to do the basics.
“In games like this the basics really count.
“That separates us from the lower leagues.
“We did it today.”
Jake had not started for Brentford since early September and not featured for six weeks.
He said he knew on Friday he would be playing and wanted to prove his worth.
He said he wanted to repay the faith shown in him by Manager Uwe Rösler.
“We always train hard to get in to the side,” said Jake.
“That was especially for this game.
“I knew I would play on Friday.
“There is always pressure to get a place, it is a good pressure, we are a good side and it is hard to get in.
“Everyone has to prove their worth.
“I think I did that.
“I could have scored a couple more goals but I ran myself in to the ground, I am happy with it.
“I feel I have always performed for the manager.
“Today he put me in and I came up with a goal.”
Jake said Brentford wanted to reach the later stages of the competition and get a crack at one of the biggest teams in the country.
“We want to get through the next round and play against the big boys,” he said.
“It is all about playing against the elite.
“You try and base yourself on their levels and see where you come up.
“One more win and we can have another go.”
