Mark Warburton gave his thoughts on his side defeating Reading 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, which gives them an outside opportunity of obtaining sixth place and qualification for this season’s Play-Offs.
“In the first half we started off brightly,” said Mark.
“We got the goal, and then for the next half an hour we were sloppy, didn’t take care of the ball, dropped too deep, weren’t brave enough and didn’t do what we do well and have done well all season.
“Second half we looked much better, got the goal, but in truth we could have had a couple more with good chances but to come here in this situation and get that result is very pleasing.”
Centre back James Tarkowski’s headed goal from a corner kick gave his side a rare goal from a set piece.
“It was a good time, early, to settle some nerves,” said Mark.
“It’s game 45 of a tough season and the situation being as it is, it’s all credit to the players.
They knew the significance of that game.
“We said before the game that we’re not going to play it down, it’s a massive game and to go and win it.
“[We had] 4,000 Brentford fans who were magnificent again; it was a good performance and good three points.”
Brentford will have to rely a win for themselves next week against Wigan Athletic and either Derby County or Ipswich Town losing to claim the last spot.
“We obviously understand that if Ipswich win or draw we fall just short,” said Mark.
“The fact is that it’s a big pressure weekend, a lot of games, I think they go away to Blackburn, so all we can worry about is Brentford at a packed Griffin Park hopefully and put on a type of performance that they’ve delivered several weeks this season and hopefully get the right result.”
Mark explained his reasons for the double substitution in the second half when Andre Gray and Alex Prithchard were withdrawn.
“Alex Pritchard got a kick on the calf, not a pull, and it was just precautionary to make sure it didn’t stiffen up,” said Mark.
“Andre has again worked tirelessly and done tremendously well.
“Stuey can play wide or down the middle, very effectively; I was delighted with Tommy Smith, he came on and kept the ball very well for us, and Jon Toral likewise.
“It was a good all round squad performance and three points.
“Let’s post 78 points and see where we are.”
