Brentford Manager Mark Warburton said he could not be too harsh on his already promoted side after their 2-2 draw with Milton Keynes Dons but admitted sloppiness cost them victory.
The Bees drew in Buckinghamshire yesterday afternoon, conceding two late goals.
Brentford went ahead at the end of the first half when James Tarkowski scored and added a second through Clayton Donaldson after half time.
But MK pulled one back from the penalty spot and then levelled with seconds remaining to take a share of the spoils.
The Bees are already promoted, and cannot catch leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers so will definitely finish second in Sky Bet League One.
But Mark said they had to learn from the final 15 minutes at Milton Keynes when a win turned in to a draw.
“I thought we dominated the play and were comfortable at 2-0,” he said, speaking after the match.
“I am disappointed we didn’t create and score more.
“We have to learn from the last 15 minutes.
“It is a difficult time of the year.
“The players have achieved the aim, which was promotion, which is great.
“We were sloppy, we gave the ball away in poor areas and we paid the price.
“We will learn from it.
“The moment you stop learning you are finished.
“When you are 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go and in control, which we were, you have to take care of the ball.
“You can’t be too harsh, they achieved their main goal, but you have to learn.”
MK had offered very little before they got a penalty with 12 minutes to go.
David Button was adjudged by referee Tim Robinson to have fouled Izale McLeod but Mark questioned the decision.
“I think the penalty was soft,” he said.
“Our feeling is that David got the ball.
“It is a tough call in the last minutes and the ref gave it as he saw it.
“I would call it debatable.”
Mark made some changes for the game, giving striker Will Grigg 90 minutes and using Nico Yennaris at right back as Alan McCormack had an injury.
Club Captain Kevin O’Connor also played the last half hour, making his 498th appearance for The Bees.
“I believe in the squad,” said Mark.
“Will needed 90 minutes, Alan McCormack had a knock but Nico came in and did well.
“Kevin came on and did well.
“He trains well every day and hasn’t had as much time on the pitch as he would like.
“He wants to play.”
Brentford have two games to go, away to Colchester United and at home to Stevenage.
Mark said they wanted to set new records having already broken the previous points high by a Brentford team, 85.
The class of 2013/14 have 91 from 44 games so far.
“The players have broken the points total and want to set new records,” said Mark.
“Our target now is 97.
“They will keep pushing.
“They are professionals and want to be the best they can be every single time.
“Every game is a focus; we will go again at Colchester on Saturday.
“We have a couple of days off now and will then prepare again.”
More than 3,300 Brentford fans were at the game.
“There was magnificent support,” said Mark.
“It was a great noise and the supporters have earned this celebration.
“They have been very patient and supported us home and away.
“I hope they do likewise at Colchester and against Stevenage.”
With Brentford now confirmed in The Championship last year, Mark was asked to look forward to next season.
“You are always looking to improve,” said the Brentford Manager.
“I have always praised the support network, as they are superb, but we now have to look at the demands placed on them.
“We have a Development Squad that will get bigger.
“We will look to add quality as and when required, we won’t replace people for the sake of it.
“We have a very good squad, good young players and some great senior professionals.
“We now have time to prepare and look at targets.
“We have had great support from the owner.
“We need to recognise what we need to do in the next division and prepare for it.”
