Marinus Dijkhuizen has been encouraged by Brentford’s start to the season but feels there is still more to come from his side.
The Bees are unbeaten in the Sky Bet Championship under the Dutch Head Coach after a draw against Ipswich Town and a 4-2 victory over Bristol City last Saturday.
With Marinus and fellow countryman, Assistant Coach Roy Hendriksen, bringing new ideas from their time coaching in Holland, the former S.B.V Excelsior manager admitted it was going to take time for everything to gel but he has been impressed by the willingness to learn of the Brentford squad.
“We are still unbeaten which is good,” said Marinus, speaking to Bees Player. “We have four points but there is still a lot to improve. It was good for us not to play this week with all the injuries that we have going on. We had a lot of training sessions. We worked on our transitions because I felt we were a little bit vulnerable there against Bristol City. We worked with the guys on that this week so it is a good week for that.
“The players like the ideas that we have brought in. There is a good connection and there is a very good spirit in the team. I like to work with this group because they want to learn and they are also giving feedback to us. We have a different culture with training and travelling so I think they are getting used to it.”
Next up for Marinus and his squad is a trip to Burnley on Saturday in the Sky Bet Championship.
The Clarets are yet to taste victory this season, after draws with Leeds United and Birmingham City and a midweek defeat to Ipswich Town.
Marinus is expecting a tough match at Turf Moor and thinks Burnley's start to the season shows the strength in depth of the league.
“You can see from Burnley’s results how tough the Championship is as they haven’t won a match yet,” said Marinus. “They are a very good defensive side with good structure and good organisation. Physically they are very strong so it will be a tough game for us.”
Ahead of Saturday’s match there has been press speculation linking Brentford striker Andre Gray with a move away from Griffin Park.
Marinus said that as long as Andre was with The Bees he would be part of the Dutchman’s plans but added that there were plenty of plans in place should Andre decide to leave.
“Andre Gray was in on Thursday and he trained with us,” said Marinus. “There was a bid accepted from Bristol City which came out in the media. The last couple of days he had some space to talk to them but he didn’t agree. When he is in he is in and we will see what happens.
“We are working behind the scenes to get other players in. We have to prepare if he goes and we will need to get another one in. A lot of clubs are looking for a striker two weeks from the end of the transfer window so it is a difficult job. We are looking for other players now because we are a little bit short with injuries. We have a good squad for Saturday but if we get any more injuries we may have a problem.”
