Head Coach Marinus Dijkhuizen gave his reaction to a thrilling ending that saw Brentford saw two dramatic late goals to earn a point against Ipswich Town.
“I think we were too much kick and rush in the first half,” said Marinus. “For the first goal, there was a scrimmage, and the ball came back in; the goal wasn’t a surprise to me.”
Dijkhuizen explained the reasoning behind putting Andre Gray on the bench for the game when it had been expected he would start the match.
“We talked a lot about it on Thursday and Friday, “said Marinus. “He said he was mentally not ready to start so it was a joint decision to keep him on the bench. I think he did a great job. He’s a young guy and it’s difficult for him.”
The Dutchman’s substitutions paid off, as he threw on attacking options as Brentford chased the game in the second half.
“We put more strikers on,” said Marinus. “That was the only option. We created more pressure, especially Gray’s running at them. We created a lot of chances in the last 30 minutes and when we finally scored I thought it was too late but we deserved a draw.”
