Marinus Dijkhuizen described the match against Bristol City as “an incredible game” as his side won 4-2 with two second half goals against ten men.
“It was an unbelievable first half,” said Marinus. “A lot happened, goals, yellow cards, red cards. It was enjoyable to watch. At the break it was already 2-2 and they had one man down, it was an incredible game.”
Luke Freeman was sent off for a high kick on Harlee Dean, with Marinus in agreement with the decision by referee Keith Stroud shortly before half time.
“In the Netherlands it’s a red card,” said Marinus. “His foot was very high and it was dangerous for Harlee Dean so I can understand why it’s a red card, I think it was a good decision.”
Jack O’Connell made his Brentford league debut after replacing James Tarkowski, who suffered a suspected broken nose in a challenge with City captain Aaron Wilbraham
“James got an elbow, I didn’t see it,” said Marinus, “His nose was badly broken so he had to come off. Jack O’Connell I’m happy with. He hasn’t played a lot but he has to be ready.”
Marinus revealed that he urged his side to be patient in the half time team talk.
“We had to be patient,” said Marinus. “It was a very good second half; we got two good goals. We have good strikers, I like them both. Andre was fantastic again today.”
The win has been tempered by the news that the injury to Jota sustained in last Saturday’s draw to Ipswich Town is long term.
“It was an awful week,” said Marinus. “First the cup defeat to Oxford and the big injury to Andreas Bjelland. Jota is out for three or four months. That’s a lot of quality players injured in one week so I’m very happy with the result.”
