Marinus Dijkhuizen gave his reaction to the 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, which saw his side cruelly concede late in a game that could have gone either way, despite Brentford being down to ten men for almost an hour due to James Tarkowski’s dismissal, conceding a penalty for Wednesday’s opening goal.
It’s hard to accept this one,” said Marinus. “We were the better team with ten men and lost the game, it’s very hard, and especially for the team as they didn’t deserve this today.”
On the penalty award, the Dutchman was adamant the dismissal was an incorrect decision by referee Geoff Eltringham.
“I’ve seen the clip,” said Marinus. “It’s a foul and maybe a yellow card but Bidwell is behind so definitely no red card.”
Brentford grew into the match thereafter and equalised after a superb strike from Alan Judge.
“We organised how we were defending and attacking,” said Marinus. “We did that with three at the back and by co-incidence we trained for it this week. We played very good from the back second half. Everything was going our way, there was a big chance with Lasse Vibe to make it 2-1.
Marinus refused to blame Jack O’Connell for Wednesday’s winner, and praised the 21-year-old’s contribution to the match after coming on substitute.
“Jack was very unlucky with the goal,” said Marinus. “He played brilliantly coming off the bench. The ball was bouncing and it was good finishing from the guy.
He also praised the rest of the side for their performance despite the defeat.
“I was proud of the team,” said Marinus. “They showed a lot of qualities and deserved to win but that’s all part of football.”
