Kyjuon Marsh-Brown was pleased to be able to contribute to Brentford’s comprehensive win over Barnsley after he heeded the words of manager Lee Carsley.
17-year-old Kyjuon was a second-half substitute for The Bees who led 4-2 at the time thanks to a brace for Courtney Senior and goals from Jermaine Udumaga and Josh Laurent.
Within five minutes of his introduction Kyjuon had added a fifth and then he set up the seventh which Logan Jeffs turned into his own net.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Kyjuon revealed that Development Squad manager Lee Carsley had told him to create chances before he was introduced and he was pleased that he was able to do just that.
The wide-midfielder said he enjoyed coming on with The Bees in control and that gave him a good opportunity to express himself.
“It was great to come off the bench and get a goal,” said Kyjuon.
“It is a magical feeling and it just gives me more confidence to push on and try and get more goals.
“Lee Carsley told me to be bright, get at the defenders and create something.
“Coming on I wanted to be direct and try and get a goal or an assist and it worked for me.
“You feel comfortable and relaxed and you want to get on the ball to try things because you know that you have got control of the game.
“If you haven’t got control of the game you have to take more time and make sure that your pass gets there.
“When you come on you need to be proactive and make sure that you keep the ball and aren’t sloppy.
“You have to be at the same pace as the game and start off fast.
“I had only been on five minutes when I scored.
“I was thinking to myself to stay calm but I kind of panicked when I got the ball.
“I kicked it and luckily it came back and then I steadied myself to shoot.
“I saw Bradley Clayton there and I was thinking about trying to pass to him but then I chopped back and decided to try myself and luckily it came off.”
Monday’s victory was Brentford’s biggest of the season and the first time that they had scored seven in the Professional Development League Two South.
The Bees led 2-0 inside eight minutes but Barnsley replied almost instantly and The Tykes also hit back straight after Lee’s side had taken a 3-1 lead at the end of the first-half.
Brentford had led in their last two matches and then let the opposition back into the game to only come away with a draw.
Kyjuon felt the big difference this week was the manner in which Brentford killed off the match by taking their chances and not allowing Barnsley a way back into the match.
“I thought our performance from start to finish was good,” said Kyjuon.
“We dropped a bit when we got the second goal and we were a bit sloppy but we got back up and got control of the game.
“We passed it and moved it and had lots of shots which was good.
“I think we had more chances this week than we did last week and we finished more.
“We took our chances this week and last week we didn’t really take our chances.
“Last week we got on top of the game but didn’t kill it off: this week we did kill it off.”
Kyjuon has been a key member of the Youth Team squad that look on course to win the Under-18 Professional Development League Two South this season.
A number of that side have appeared for Lee’s Under-21s in recent weeks and Kyjuon feels they have brought their confidence and belief into the Development Squad.
For their part the Under-21s are on a run of one defeat in eight and Kyjuon believes there is a real confidence within both groups that allows them to play the kind of expansive football that they want to play.
“We all believe in our quality and think that we can step up,” said Kyjuon.
“We have quality in the Youth Team and that helps us when we are stepping up.
“We are keeping our quality and even matching that of the Under-21s.
“The confidence has transferred from the Youth Team to the Under-21s now since Lee Carsley has come in.
“The confidence has been flowing, we have been winning games and the style of play in both the Youth Team and the Under-21s has been getting much better and that has been shown on the pitch.
“It is exciting to know that the Youth Team are in the play-offs and we just have to keep fighting for that.
“My main focus is to play for the Youth Team and make sure that we win the play-offs.
“After that I don’t know what the future holds for me but hopefully I can get a chance.”
