Mark Smith moved one step closer to a Ryman Premier League winners' medal with Hampton and Richmond Borough on Saturday as The Beavers ran out 5-1 winners over Brentwood Town at The Beveree. The home side took the lead through Leon Solomon midway through the first-half. Mark, who has captained the side in recent weeks, then saved a penalty before Jamal Lowe made it 2-0 on the half hour. Alex Teniola pulled one back to complete a breathless ten minutes of action but second-half goals from Brendan Kiernan, Tom Beere and Charlie Moone ensured another three points for The Beavers, who remain four points clear with three matches to play.
In Spain Jota played 90 minutes for Eibar as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Villareal in La Liga. The winger played a part as Eibar took an early lead, his cutback from the dead-ball line wasn’t dealt with allowing Ander Capa to sweep home. The Basque side’s advantage lasted only 13 minutes, Adrian Lopez tapping home from close range. Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Roberto Soldado completed the turnaround early on in the second-half to leave Eibar ninth in the table and without a win in their last seven matches.
Daniel O’Shaughnessy wasn’t in the squad as FC Midtjylland secured an important three points in the race for European football after a 2-0 win at home to Brøndby IF. Rilwan Hassan capitalised on a defensive slip to fire FCM ahead on the stroke of half-time and the points were wrapped up midway through the second-half when Martin Pusic headed home. The win leaves FCM in fourth but just a point behind second place.
