Jon De Souza said the 1-1 draw between Brentford's Development Squad and Maidenhead United was a fair result.
The Bees shared the spoils with the Blue Square Bet South side on Tuesday night with Myles Hippolyte on the score sheet.
The Youth Team striker gave Brentford the lead early in the second half after good work by trialist Christian Tavernier but Maidenhead scored an equaliser Brentford will want to forget.
Josh Clarke almost set up a second for The Bees with a burst down the right but the ball was hacked clear and Lee Barney got to it ahead of Brentford goalkeeper Joe Martin, he lifted it towards goal from 50 yards and Sam Griffiths took a too casual approach to clearing it, letting the ball roll over his foot and in.
"It was a good work-out, in terms of fitness," said Jon, the Development Squad Manager.
"It was a good test for us.
"They were the better team for the first 25 minutes but we had some chances.
"We grew in to the first half and we passed the ball well, although I still wanted more from us in terms of the way we moved the ball.
"We finished off the first half well and it was fairly even at half time.
"We had the clearer chances, but maybe they created more.
"I told the players to go out and move the ball, try to get in their half.
"We started brilliantly for the first ten to 15 minutes and deserved the lead.
"Maidenhead were a lot better in the last 25 minutes, after I'd made a couple of changes, they deserved their equaliser and maybe deserved to win it.
"Overall, I think a draw was a fair result."
Jon said some of his players got 90 minutes under their belts for the first time in pre-season and that may have affected the way his team finished the game.
He said he was seeing definite progress from previous games and believed the Development Squad would get stronger as the season went on and they start playing games in an Under-21 league set up as part of the Elite Player Performance Plan.
"It's small progress," he said. "But we are making progress.
"We didn't pass it well enough in the first games, we did that better against Maidenhead.
"We will be in a competitive league this year.
"We have to win games like the First Team.
"We will get stronger.
"Alfie Mawson, Antonio German and Emmanuel Oyeleke are with the First Team in Germany and Charlie Adams is injured.
"They may come back to us.
"But it will be even better for the Club if they are good enough to be part of the First Team squad and we then have to bring the next group through."
