James Ferry knows that he needs to continue to impress if he wants to build on his first involvement in the Brentford matchday squad. The midfielder, who turns 19 on Wednesday, was named on the bench for The Bees trip to Ipswich Town earlier this month having been 19th Man on a number of occasions previously. James, who joined the club when he was 14, said it was a great moment to see his shirt hanging up in the dressing room at Portman Road but insists he is not going to stop there.
“Being on the bench at Ipswich Town just inspires you to keep going,” said James. “There is a massive difference between being on the bench rather than the 19th man. You feel part of it. You are in at half-time listening to the team talk. You always look forward to getting your name on the shirt as a youngster and to do it at Brentford is good. I need to keep trying to put myself up there and keep performing. I need to try and impress him whenever he is looking.”
James was speaking to Bees Player after the Development Squad ended their season with a 4-2 defeat away at Coventry City. The Bees never got going, despite an early goal for Jan Holldack, and were punished by a direct Sky Blues outfit. Nathan Fox added a late consolation for Flemming Pedersen’s side who will end the season in the bottom three.
“That definitely wasn’t the way that we wanted to end the season,” said James. “We started off well but we continuously made poor mistakes throughout and that killed us. We have played well recently but today wasn’t good enough. The coaches told us that it was disappointing to end the season that way and the fact that we have got a young team today shouldn’t make a difference.”
