Jake Bidwell said if Brentford produce the same level of performance in their remaining seven Sky Bet League One matches as they did against Sheffield United they achieve their aims at the end of the season.
The Bees drew 0-0 at Bramall Lane last night to further secure their spot in the automatic promotion places.
Brentford are second in the table, five points clear of third-placed Leyton Orient having played a game fewer.
Jake, speaking after the match last night, said Brentford did enough to win at Bramall Lane.
He said The Bees did everything but score.
“I think we did enough to win,” said the left back.
“Anyone watching the game, not knowing where they were, would think we were the home team with the amount of pressure we were putting on.
“We had the chances but, unfortunately, we couldn’t put them away.
“I am sure if we play like that for the rest of the season we will get to where we want to be.
“We are a little bit disappointed.
“I think we did enough to win the game and our level of play was enough to deserve the win.
“We just didn’t get the goal.
“If we can keep that standard up for the next seven games, or until the end of the season, I am sure we will get to where we want to be.”
The Sheffield United draw came on the back of a defeat to Rotherham United and a draw away to Oldham Athletic.
Jake said the Sheffield United performance was the standard Brentford wanted to reach.
“In recent games we probably haven’t played as well as we have done earlier in the season,” said Jake.
“It was important to put in a performance tonight.
“We have set standards and want to reach them every week.
“When we don’t, it is a disappointment.”
Brentford had complete control of the game at Bramall Lane.
They had five great chances in the first 12 minutes, had a penalty given and then controversially overturned and pressed for the winner until the end.
A mixture of good Sheffield United defending and wayward finishing denied The Bees the win.
“I was trying to get up as much as I could and make a nuisance of myself,” said Jake, describing his role.
“At times I was marking no-one; there was no use for me at the back.
“I was trying to get up the pitch and help the lads to get the goal.
“We just didn’t do enough tonight.
“It can be tough to stay switched on in games like that.
“They had breakaways but that is modern football, you have to get used to it.
“We did analysis on them and that is how they play.
“I think we handled it well.
“We had chances but couldn’t put one away.”
The game’s controversial moment came just past the half hour.
Marcello Trotta got away from the home defence in the inside right channel and burst in to the penalty area.
Kieron Freeman lunged in with a tackle as the striker prepared to pull the trigger and the Brentford man went down.
Referee Eddie Ilderton, who was well-placed to see if the defender had played the striker before he got a clear foot on the ball, pointed for a penalty and sent the Sheffield United man off.
He then spoke to assistant referee Mark Dwyer and changed his mind, recalled the defender, now in the mouth of the tunnel, and gave a drop ball.
“It was ridiculous,” said Jake.
“It was very disappointing but it has gone now.
“I have played a hundred games and I have not seen anything like that.
“I don’t think I ever will again either.”
Brentford have seven League One games remaining.
They have four at home starting with back-to-back matches in the next seven days against Notts County and Crawley Town.
Jake said three away games in a row had been tough but Brentford had it in their grasp.
“We have seven games left and it’s in our hands,” he said.
“We are not relying on anyone to drop points.
“If we perform as we have done tonight and add goals I am sure we will get to where we want to be.
“We had three away games and it had been a tough ten days.
“The home games won’t be gimees but we would like to think we can take advantage of them.”
