Jake Bidwell felt there were encouraging signs from Brentord’s performance against Derby County this afternoon despite slipping to a 3-1 defeat at Griffin Park. After a goalless first-half Alan Judge’s fine solo effort had The Bees ahead just after the break and it looked like that might be enough for the three points with ten minutes to play. However The Rams struck twice in three minutes through Jeff Hendrick and Cyrus Christie before Chris Martin wrapped up the points in injury-time.
Speaking to Bees Player after the defeat Jake said: “We weathered the storm and then Alan Judge scored us a great goal to get us in front. They made the changes and bought on the firepower that they have off bench. I don’t think anyone else in the league has that quality on the bench and that changed the game but I still think we deserved at least a point. We were weathering the storm but it was disappointing to concede the two quickfire goals. Even after that we still had chances and if we could have taken one of those then we would be coming away with a point. They always say that things go against you when you are on a bad run and I can’t say anything more. There were signs there today that there was an improvement and you like to say nine times out of ten that performance would get you a result.”
The Brentford captain was denied an equaliser deep into injury time by a goal-line clearance by Scott Carson with The Rams going straight up the other end to make it 3-1. The Bees are now on a run of one win in nine and Jake feels that the breaks are simply not falling their way at the moment.
“We are all disappointed because I thought we at least deserved a point,” said Jake. “You talk about fine margins in football and that is a prime example. I had a chance cleared off the line at one end and they go up the other end to make it 3-1. There are encouraging signs as it was a better performance today than in the last few weeks so that gives us something to build on even though we are disappointed. We have got to carry that into Tuesday and look to build on it again. I like to think that if we do that it will be enough to get us the result.”
The Bees have only got four days to wait until they can get back into action with Wolverhampton Wanderers visiting Griffin Park on Tuesday. Jake feels it is important that the players do not get down after the result and pick themselves up to give the fans something to cheer about.
“The good thing about this league is that if you have a bad result there is always another game coming up fast,” said Jake. “We have got to put today behind us now, rest and recover and focus on Tuesday. As captain I have to keep the lads positive. Today was an improvement but we can make more improvements and get better. The performance today shows we are going in the right direction. We have to stay positive and put in a good performance to hopefully pick up a win. The fans spend their hard earned money coming to watch us. Nobody likes losing and nobody likes watching a losing team so we are looking to turn it around.
