Dean Smith felt Brentford deserved more from this afternoon’s Sky Bet Championship fixture with Derby County after The Rams scored three times in the final 11 minutes to come from behind to win 3-1 at Griffin Park. The Bees were second best for much of the first-half but took the lead thanks to a fine solo effort from Alan Judge just after the break. However Darren Wassall’s side scored a quickfire double through Jeff Hendrick and Cyrus Christie before Chris Martin wrapped up the points in injury time.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Dean said: “After 20 minutes we were thankful to David Button for keeping us in it. They started off very powerfully and you can see the quality that they have in their team and in their substitutes. After that spell we competed with them, gave it a right good go and there were chances at both ends. We got them in at 0-0 and addressed a few things and I think we were alright in the second-half. Alan Judge scored his goal to go 1-0 up and then we had a number of counter-attacks.
“It was a bit of a kick in the stomach in terms of the goal that they then scored to equalise. They had not really got to see David Button before that. We had looked quite well organised and defensively good and it was a kick in the teeth as we thought it was a rugby charge down but the referee didn’t give it. We are trying and we are working hard and I thought that we looked a lot more organised that in recent weeks.”
Today’s defeat means that it is one win in nine now for The Bees in 2016 and Dean feels that luck is definitely not on his team’s side at the moment.
“We are going through a sticky patch at the moment where we are not getting the rub of the green,” said Dean. “Marco Djuricin has missed a header and their lad has cleared one off the line right at the death. That is the fine margin between 2-2 and 3-1 as they break down the other end and score.”
Brentford are straight back into action again this Tuesday when Wolverhampton Wanderers visit Griffin Park. Dean is pleased to have such a quick opportunity to put today’s defeat behind the team and wants to see an entertaining performance in front of the home fans against Kenny Jackett’s Wolves.
“My job is to get them back up for Wolves on Tuesday night and hopefully put this result behind us,” said Dean. “Our better performances have been at home and hopefully we can get a result and a performance on Tuesday. Every time the players go out we want to see entertaining football, the players working hard, enjoying it and being determined. I think we saw that today but we just didn’t get the result today.”
