Tom Adeyemi told Bees Player he scored the winning goal for Brentford against Scunthorpe United with his first real touch of the ball.
The Bees beat Scunthorpe 1-0 at Griffin Park with Tom coming off the bench to score the winner.
Speaking after the match, the midfield player said it was “very nice” to have made such an immediate impact and praised the way Marcello Trotta created space for him to score.
“It was my first touch,” said Tom.
“I’d been involved on the right, maybe made a tackle and missed it.
“I think it was my first actual touch of the ball.
“It was a good one.
“I was hoping to make an impact but to come on and score with your first touch is very nice.
“Marcello Trotta had the ball in the box and I think the defenders were drawn to him.
“That opened up space for me.
“The ball found its way to me and I put it in.”
Brentford had dominated the match but it took them until the 70th minute to get ahead.
The visitors came to Griffin Park with a defensive midfield player behind another four and full backs that barely ventured forward.
Brentford had numerous shots blocked while visiting goalkeeper Sam Slocombe made a few good saves before the breakthrough came.
Tom said teams coming to Griffin Park and playing in that way was a sign that Brentford were feared.
“Teams are coming here, sitting in, with ten men behind the ball and asking us to break them down,” he said.
“Sometimes it is easier if a team comes out and has a go at you.
“There is then space to counter.
“We have to keep the ball and drag the other team around to make that space.
“That is why we are winning games 1-0 and 2-1 as opposed to opening teams up.
“When teams defend like that it is difficult to pick an incisive forward pass.
“You have to go wide to the full backs as that is where the space is.
“It is then crosses in to the box and try to create that way rather than playing between the lines, which we try to do when we can.
“We have played every team once, they know what we are capable of and that seems to be their way of countering it.
“It is a sign of the respect they have for us.
“It is a good sign, it shows we are feared.”
Tom said wins were more important than performances at this stage of the season.
Brentford faced a similar game against Walsall last week but could not get the vital goal.
Tom said Brentford’s ability to keep up their momentum this week was the difference.
“At this stage of the season, the points are all important,” he said.
“Ideally we would like a performance and a result every week but if we can only get one, it will be the result every time.
“It is very important to keep winning.
“Last week in the first half we had all the ball and all the chances, second half it was a bit stagnant, we weren’t as fluid with our passing.
“This afternoon we were able to continue and it takes one moment, the other team switches off and you punish them.
“You have to be patient, keep knocking on the door and something will open up.”
The Bees climbed to fourth in npower League One with the win, their third in the last four matches.
They are now unbeaten in five having lost two of three before that.
Brentford travel to Stevenage on Tuesday and then Carlisle United next Saturday and Tom said the squad were up for the challenge.
“This is the business end of the season, it is the final push and it is the time we need to rack up as many points as we can,” he said.
“We went through a dip, by our standards, it feels we are out of that now and back to putting a run together.
“That’s what we need at this stage of the season.
“When you go away from home it’s a different game, their crowd expect them to come out and have a go.
“It’s a challenge we are looking forward to and hopefully we can keep the run going.”
