Brentford finished off their Sky Bet Championship season with a bang after a 5-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at The John Smith’s Stadium this afternoon. Scott Hogan scored another double with Sergi Canos, Lasse Vibe and John Swift also on target in The Bees biggest win of the season. Speaking to Bees Player after the match, Dean Smith said he was delighted with the win and the performance to finish off the season.
“It was a superb way to finish off and it is very satisfying to finish ninth in the Sky Bet Championship,” said Dean. “There have been ups and downs this season but the way that we finished is a credit to the players, the staff and everyone. I am really pleased for the fans who travelled in their numbers that they got a superb performance and some clinical finishing. It was really pleasing to get the five goals. Huddersfield are not a bad team so we had to be organised behind the ball and when we broke the play up we looked clinical.
“At the moment we have got Scott Hogan and Lasse Vibe who will run behind teams and we have all seen what Jamie Vardy can do doing that. These two players look a threat every time they go in behind the opposition and it allows us to get higher up the pitch. Huddersfield look to play quite an expansive game and they look to stretch you. It was important that we didn’t get stretched and that they played around us. It was as if their goal angered us. We bounced straight back, scored at the other end, and there was only one winner from there.”
The Bees five goals moved them level with Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion as joint top scorers in the league with 72. Dean Smith’s side have now found the net 24 times in their last nine matches and thinks that the goals in The Bees squad makes them a danger opposition for anyone.
“We have finished joint top of the Championship goal scorers,” said Dean. “That is a credit to everybody that we are creating chances with the attacking brand of football that we play. There are times when you have to change and the tactical knowledge and education is superb and that has shone through. This is very much a physical and athletic league but if you have got good forwards you can go places.”
