Shaleum Logan described Brentford’s 2-1 victory over Notts County as a “great win”.
The Bees picked up their third straight win by beating County at Griffin Park, completing an npower League One double over the Nottingham side in the process.
Brentford went ahead in the first half through a bizarre Toumani Diagouraga goal and then doubled the lead with 20 minutes remaining when Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his first goal for the Club.
But Alan Judge tumbled under the merest contact from Jake Bidwell to win a penalty, signalled by the assistant referee, and then scored from the re-bound after Simon Moore saved the spot kick from Jamal Campbell-Ryce.
County piled on the pressure as they searched for an equaliser but Brentford held on.
Shaleum, speaking to Bees Player after the match, said Brentford sat too deep after conceding but the win was all important.
“When we went 2-0 I thought it was game, set and match,” said the defender.
“They then got a dubious penalty and when they scored it was always going to be a difficult last 20 minutes.
“They have nothing to lose and everything to gain from coming at us.
“We sat off more than we should have let them come at us.
“It is a great win though.
“At this stage of the season it is not about performances, three points is massive.
“Each game is about points, not performances.”
Brentford dominated the early stages, hitting the post and going close on a few more occasions.
But it took them until the 20th minutes to go ahead, and in strange circumstances.
Sam Saunders delivered a corner in to the box that County failed to deal with, Jonathan Douglas laid it back to Toumani and the midfield man fired in a shot that should never have beaten County goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski.
However, the goalkeeper failed to get his body behind the ball; it slipped through his hands and rolled over the line to give Toumani his first goal of the season.
“Toumani will probably never score with a shot like that in his life,” said Shaleum.
“Probably 99 times out of 100 the keeper picks that up.
“That one time it went in.
“Maybe we didn’t have that luck last year, we got it today.
“It went for us.
“We had a few chances in the first 20 minutes.
“The goal might have been dubious but it was deserved.
“We came at them, started well.
“The manager wanted us to go at them, which we did.
“We deserved to be up.
“We got our just deserts.”
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the second, and what proved to be the winner, when he latched on to a Tom Adeyemi pass and shot low in to the corner of the net.
It was his first goal since arriving on loan from Charlton Athletic.
Shaleum, who was at Manchester City with the striker, said he had told him he would score against County.
“Even at 2-0 the game is not finished,” said Shaleum.
“It definitely isn’t at 1-0.
“It’s important to keep going.
“I am close with Bradley.
“I told him at the start today was his day.
“He had not scored for us but he has brought a lot to them team.
“Everybody appreciates that.
“He is a goal scorer, we saw that today, hopefully he can do it a few more times in the last seven games.”
Brentford climbed to third in npower League One with the win.
They are level on points with AFC Bournemouth in second, having played two games fewer, and two points behind leaders Doncaster Rovers with a game in hand.
Doncaster were beaten by Coventry City yesterday while Swindon Town, who started the day in second, drew at home with relegation-threatened Oldham Athletic.
The Bees have seven games remaining, the first of which is a trip to Milton Keynes Dons on Easter Monday.
“We know it is in our hands.
“It’s good to see what other teams do.
“It is part of football, we don’t lose concentration.
“We know what we have to do and everything will fall in to place.
“The game at MK Dons is the sort of game that puts you in The Championship.
“We went last season and won 2-1.
“It’s two good passing teams.
“That team that works hardest and wants it most will get the points.
“Hopefully that will be us.”
