Jonathan Douglas said Brentford should have beaten npower League One leaders Tranmere Rovers after “out-playing” them at their Prenton Park home.
The Bees picked up a point on Merseyside, ending Tranmere’s 100 per cent home record, thanks to a last-gasp goal.
Jonathan, who scored that goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, said Brentford played very well for the first hour and slipped behind against the run of play.
He added the belief in the camp kept The Bees going until the end.
“I think we should have won,” said Jonathan, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“When we came here we knew it was going to be tough.
“They are top of the league and are there for a reason.
“It’s not easy to come here when they are flying.
“But we hung in there, dug deep, played very well for 60 minutes and they scored against the run of play.
“We kept going until the end and managed to get a point.
“If we had got a goal, we would have produced a complete first 60 minutes.
“We out-battled them, out-fought them and out-played them on the ball as well.
“That was great but we went 1-0 down.
“After the goal the lads at the back were different class.
“They dropped deeper towards the end of the game.
“Last year we would have lost that game.
“There is a new belief in the lads this year and we kept going.”
Jonathan scored his second goal of the season with almost the last kick of the game.
A Clayton Donaldson long throw bounced across and he turned it in at the far post.
“It was a long throw in that came up trumps,” said the midfield man.
“I thought it might come to me as there was one just before, when the referee gave a soft foul, that almost got to me.
“Luckily it fell to me and I was lucky enough to score.
“It was a lovely finish, I meant it!
“No, I just swung a leg at it and it was nice to see it go in.”
Jonathan said Brentford were happy overall with a point.
He said The Bees had shown they could match the best in League One over the past season and a quarter and could improve on last season’s ninth-place finish.
Brentford host Shrewsbury Town at Griffin Park on Tuesday and Jonathan said he was looking forward to it.
“We would have been really, really disappointed if we had lost the game,” he said.
“It’s a point gained for us.
“We played really well, made one mistake and conceded a goal.
“Overall we are happy.
“We proved last year when we played the so-called bigger teams that we could match them, we just didn’t score when we were on top.
“There’s nothing that frightens us.
“With the squad we have got, we can do better than we did last year.
“We will look forward to Tuesday now, that will be a difficult game but hopefully we can get maximum points.”
