David Weir said the performance and result in Brentford’s Sky Bet League One loss to Colchester United “wasn’t good enough”.
The Bees lost 4-1 in Essex on Saturday afternoon and Brentford Assistant Manager David said it was “very disappointing”.
Brentford conceded three goals late in the first half, one from a free kick, one from a corner and the third a penalty after another corner was half cleared.
Stuart Dallas pulled a goal back but Brentford couldn’t find a way back in to the game and conceded a fourth in the second half.
David said he was particularly disappointed for almost 2,500 Brentford fans that made the trip and said everyone at the Club had to ensure it didn’t happen again.
“It was very disappointing,” he said.
“The performance and the result weren’t good enough and we are disappointed for the fans that turned up in their numbers.
“They were looking for a party.
“We will look at the goals but that will be a long meeting.
“We have conceded goals from set pieces, which we don’t do.
“As a group we underperformed, we know it wasn’t good enough.
“We will look at what we can do better.
“There is no hiding place and I am disappointed for the people that had to watch it.
“As a group we weren’t good enough and we have to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
“That level of performance as we go higher will hurt us.”
Brentford have already clinched promotion from Sky Bet League One but David said there was to be no easing off.
He said they wanted to ensure there was a big gap to the teams below them and a small one to Wolverhampton Wanderers above them.
Colchester needed points to avoid relegation and David said the home side deserved credit for the way they played.
“Our business is not done,” said David, speaking to Bees Player: Match Day Live.
“We spoke before the game that we don’t want to be 10, 12, 15 points behind Wolves and have the teams behind us catch up.
“It hasn’t been close, we feel we have been one of the best teams in the division and want to show we have done it from start to finish.
“We lowered our standard and that was the result.
“Credit to Colchester, they were fighting for their lives and their place in the league was at stake.
“It means a lot to them and they showed it.
“We didn’t do enough to win the game.”
Brentford got a goal back in first half stoppage time.
David sad the message at half time was to get the next goal.
“One positive was Stuart’s goal,” he said.
“He always does his best, he deserved his goal.
“We had to score the next goal and the game would be up for grabs again.
“We still had a chance.
“We had to think about how to score goals.
“We lost a disappointing goal and didn’t convert at the other end.
“We weren’t good enough.”
Brentford have one more game to go, against Stevenage at Griffin Park on Saturday.
David said after a disappointing day at Colchester, and letting a two-goal lead slip in drawing against Milton Keynes Dons, The Bees wanted to put on a show.
He added that Club Captain Kevin O’Connor would at the forefront of discussions concerning team selection.
Kevin has played 499 games for Brentford and can join Ken Coote, Jamie Bates and Peter Gelson in playing 500 for The Bees next week.
“We will pick a team first and foremost to win the game,” said David.
“It has been a disappointing day today and there was a disappointing end to the game at Milton Keynes.
“We need a performance and a result next week.
“Regardless of who is playing we need to end on a high.
“But Kevin will be at the front of our thoughts.
“With the potential for it to be his 500th game, we want to be part of that.
“It takes dedication and looking after yourself on and off the pitch to get to that number.
“Kevin has done it for one club and I am sure there have occasions when Kevin has thought about leaving or had the opportunity.
“He has shown great loyalty to the Football Club.
“Hopefully he is getting the benefit, he can see the Club becoming more successful and a Club that people associate Kevin O’Connor with.
“He has a lot to give and I am sure he will be at the Club a long time in lots of different roles.
“To play 500 games for one club makes him a special player that will be remembered for a long time.”
