Herson Rodrigues Alves scored twice to help Brentford to victory over Cardiff City at Jersey Road this morning and secure a top two finish in the Under-18 PDL Two South.
Things started badly for Jon De Souza's side as Ellis Bellamy, son of former Wales International Craig, capitalised on a defensive mix up to give the visitors a 3rd minute lead.
Brentford got their leveller on the stroke of half-time as Rhys Abrizze turned into his own net under pressure from Alves.
There was no doubt about who got Brentford's second as Alves thumped home from the edge of the box on the hour.
Alves grabbed a third 12 minutes later and the points were wrapped up by Jeremiah Kamanzi late on.
Jon made two changes from last Saturday's win over Millwall with Kyjuon Marsh-Brown and Reece Cole coming in for Joshua Bohui and Bradley Clayton.
Conditions were far from ideal for The Bees brand of passing football with a rock-hard bobbly pitch and strong wind and a Brentford mistake gifted the visitors an early lead.
Audrius Laucys mishit his pass back to Nik Tzanev and Bellamy was able to nip in and poke home into an empty net.
Rollin Menayese should have done better with a headed chance from eight yards five minutes later and Abrizze brought a fine save from Tzanev with a long range effort, Jake Watkins tamely hitting the rebound straight at Tzanev.
There was no doubt Cardiff had bossed the opening quarter of an hour but slowly The Bees adapted to the conditions and from then on took control of the first-half.
Alves saw a shot blocked behind for a corner from which the tall striker was denied by Joe Massaro in the home goal.
Zain Westbrooke fired a free-kick straight at Massaro and Kyjuon Marsh-Brown, this week called up to a full Antigua and Barbuda World Cup Training Camp, fired over from ten yards.
Marsh-Brown's next effort brought a good save from Massaro at his near post and the Cardiff stopper made an even better block to prevent Reece Cole netting from close range.
Tom Field set up Marsh-Brown but again the winger fired over as it looked like the visitors would get to half-time with their lead intact.
However five minutes before the break Westbrooke released Kamanzi and he fired a beautiful ball across the six yard box that Abrizze turned past his own goalkeeper with Alves throwing himself at the ball.
There was no let up in Brentford's attacking intent in the opening minutes of the second-half as Cardiff struggled, against the wind, to get out of their own half.
With Westbrooke pulling the strings in midfield and James Ferry and Cole breaking up play every time Cardiff won the ball back Brentford dominated the opening stages of the half.
Westbrooke brought the best out of Massaro with a 25 yard effort, Cole fired straight at the visiting keeper and Sam Williams made a fine block to deny Laucys but eventually the pressure did tell.
Kamanzi battled well for the ball just outside the Cardiff box and he threaded the ball through to Alves who thumped home past Massaro from 15 yards.
Gradi Milenge ran 60 yards to set up Cole whose shot was well held by Massaro and Menayese made a vital tackle as Alves looked to shoot from six yards with Brentford continuing to pile forward.
Cardiff hadn't mustered an attempt in the opening 25 minutes of the half and when they did Tzanev was on hand to push Elvis Menayese's header behind for a corner which led to Brentford's third.
The corner was cleared and a poor header from Will Taylor allowed Cole to feed Alves just inside his own half on the right hand touchline; the tall striker ran and ran until he reached the edge of the box where he guided a left-footed shot into the bottom corner past the despairing dive of Massaro.
Massaro had no chance with that effort but he should have done far better with Brentford's fourth that arrived two minutes later as he dropped a looping cross at the feet of Kamanzi who couldn't miss from five yards.
The Cardiff keeper partly atoned for that error by denying Alves from close range after Kamanzi's ball had found him in all sorts of space inside the area.
Brentford kept pressing in the closing stages as Marsh-Brown shot over, Kamanzi brought a regulation save out of Massaro and then in injury-time the Cardiff keeper was alert to keep out Cole's quickly taken free-kick.
As it was the match finished 4-1 meaning a fourth straight league win which, coupled with defeats for Crystal Palace and Swansea City, means The Bees have secured a top two finish in this year's Under-18 Professional Development League Two South.
