Mark Warburton said his side will always look to impose their style of play when it comes to the Sky Bet Championship this season.
Having got their season up-and-running with a point at home to Charlton last Saturday The Bees next assignment is a tough trip to the South Coast to take on AFC Bournemouth.
The Cherries had a great first season back in the second tier last campaign falling narrowly short of making the play-offs.
They began this campaign with a 4-0 victory away at Huddersfield suggesting that last season was no fluke.
Ahead of the fixture Mark Warburton spoke to Bees Player and he said that he is expecting a tough clash on the South Coast on Saturday.
However he added that it is important that whoever The Bees play this season that they stick to their style of play and looking to impose their game on the opposition.
“Bournemouth had a fantastic season and finished ninth in their first season back in the Championship which is a great achievement,” said Mark.
“I also remember that Bournemouth had a tough start to the campaign with some heavy defeats.
“The big thing from our perspective is that they learnt from that and moved on very very quickly.
“We have to recognise that and learn from our mistakes.
“It is a tough division with strong teams and you get punished if you make mistakes.
“The margins are finer and we have to make sure that we recognise that and respond accordingly.
“They will play with a 4-4-2 with Arter and O’Kane in the midfield.
“They will be solid and compact very quickly.
“They are clever out wide and have two willing workers up front.
“They are comfortable on the ball and they are patient in their build-up.
“There are some very high quality players there and we are aware of them.
“We will look at our strengths and we will see what we can do with our strengths to negate their game.
“For us it is about going to a game in the right manner and looking to impose our style on that game.
“It is important that we going about our business properly, prepare appropriately and then look at what we do well.”
Mark was speaking less than 48 hours after The Bees had been involved in one of the most remarkable Capital One Cup ties of all time as they shared 12 goals with Dagenham & Redbridge before eventually seeing the Sky Bet League Two side off on penalties.
The Bees led 2-0, 3-1 and 4-3 in normal time, as well as leading 5-4 in extra time, but needing a 117th minute header from Harlee Dean to send the tie to penalties.
Richard Lee was the hero in the shootout saving two penalties before Club Captain Kevin O’Connor netted the decisive spot-kick.
The Bees manager said that it was important that his side learnt quickly from the good, and the bad, aspects of the fixture against The Daggers.
After a gruelling 120 minute game Mark was pleased with the way that the majority of the players had recovered from their knocks and cramps during the game.
“We debriefed the Dagenham game this morning and worked with the analysis team to pick out key aspects of the game both positive and negative,” said Mark.
“We then work on that with the players which is what we did this morning.
“We look at the goals scored, goals conceded, the positive aspects of play and learn from them and move on.
“We have to learn from the game.
“We were 2-0 up after 13 minutes, dominating play and we should have finished the game off and been more clinical and ruthless in that position.
“We let them back in and after going 3-1 up we conceded goals at bad times just before half-half and in the 92 minute.
“We have conceded goals at bad times in both halves and it is important for us to recognise it and learn from that.
“Nico got a nasty knee in the back, very similar to the injury that Moses Odubajo got in training here.
“We will wait and see what the medical team say on if Nico will be involved at the weekend.
“Tommy Smith came back strong this morning.
“He felt something in his groin and it was important that we didn’t lose Tommy for a longer period of time.
“We will see how he shapes up.
“Moses has trained well this morning and the guys like Montell who were cramping up the other night are back now.
“The squad is in shape considering it was quite a tough 120 minutes.
“You saw how fit the squad was and they had good intensity against Charlton and in all the pre-season fixtures.”
Brentford’s reward for seeing off The Daggers is a Second-Round derby at home to Fulham.
It will be the first time the two sides have met since 1998 and the first of three meetings in league and cup this season.
Mark said that he and the players were well aware of the fixtures’ importance to the fans but said that it is key that the players concentrate on the upcoming league fixtures before turning their attention to the League Cup.
The former Sporting Director added that the League Cup was a good opportunity for players to get good minutes on the pitch and put pressure on the players currently occupying their shirt in the league XI.
“The draw was almost like fate,” said Mark.
“We are conscious that it is a huge game for the supporters.
“It is a huge West London derby and it is about us approaching it in the right way and hopefully getting the right result.
“Between now and then there are important league games and once we get the Birmingham City game out of the way then our focus goes onto Fulham and making sure we are well prepared and in the best shape.
“We have got a very competitive squad fighting for starting shirts and they have to know there is a chance to impress.
“Nico Yennaris and Harlee Dean came in and they are very close to playing, Tommy Smith came in and played a full 90 minutes so it is a chance for the guys who are there and there abouts to show what they can do and keep the guys in the starting shirts under pressure.
“They know they can’t screw up.
“It is up to them to maintain a level of performance and consistency because if not then there are guys waiting in the wings.”
The Bees will definitely be without three members of the squad for Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth as Scott Hogan, Sam Saunders and Adam Forshaw are all out injured.
Mark is hopeful that all three may be back in contention soon adding that there had been no further developments on the future of League One Player of the Year Forshaw.
“Scott Hogan is back working with us and we are looking forward to working with him fully soon,” said Mark.
“Sam Saunders has had an on-going problem but fingers crossed there is some light at the end of the tunnel and he will be back with us soon.
“Adam is in training with the younger squad today.
“Adam is a great guy and he is well liked by everyone here at the club.
“However the fact of the matter is that our focus has to be on Bournemouth and Adam knows that.
“He is training with the Under-21s and it is nice to see him around the place.
“There has been no change in the situation that we are aware of.”
