Young goalkeeper Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson has joined Brentford B from Icelandic side Breiðablik for an undisclosed fee.

The Iceland youth international completed a medical yesterday, Friday 8 June, and signed for The Bees that afternoon. He has signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season. The deal will be complete subject to final paperwork and international clearance.

Patrik will not turn 18 until November and has already played seven times for his country at youth level. He made his debut for Iceland Under-17 when he was just 15. He came through the youth ranks at Breiðablik and played for the Icelandic team’s Under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League last autumn.

Patrik moved to ĺþróttafélag Reykjavíkur on loan for the 2018 season, which started in May, and has been playing for them in the second tier of Icelandic football. He has played in their first five matches of the season, as well as three Icelandic cup ties. The teenager will link up with Brentford B for the start of the English pre-season period at the end of this month.

Kevin O’Connor, Brentford B Head Coach, said: “We had Patrik training with us towards the end of last season and he showed us he has the potential to be a top goalkeeper. There is still room for improvement but he is a young man and we look forward to developing the talent he has over the coming years.”
