Brentford midfield players Mathias Jensen and Christian Nørgaard have been named in the Denmark squad for two upcoming matches. Denmark have a pair of qualification matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the start of next month. They play Moldova next Saturday, 9 October, and then Austria three days later and the Brentford duo will be in the squad for the matches.
Denmark could clinch a place at the World Cup, which will be held in Qatar next winter, in the coming days. They have won all six games so far and top UEFA Qualification Group F, seven points ahead of Scotland. The group winners will earn a place in the tournament in late 2022 and Denmark will secure that spot if they win both games and may not even need to do that.
Both Christian and Mathias have been regulars for Denmark in the past 12 months. Both made their debuts for their country in the autumn of 2020 and earned a place in the Denmark squad for the delayed UEFA European Championships 2020. Mathias played all six games and Christian played in five as Denmark reached the last four of the tournament, played across Europe this summer.
Christian has earned himself 12 caps while Mathias has won 13. Both have put themselves in to the top five players in Brentford history with the most caps. Both could continue to climb in the coming weeks.
Christian has represented Denmark at every age group, as well as at full international level. He played 73 official games from Under-16 to Under-21 level and scored five goals. He represented Denmark in an unofficial game against Sweden in early 2018 and played in the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in 2015 and 2017 as well as the 2011 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
Mathias has come through the ranks with the Danish national team. He was Under-21 Player of the Year in 2017 and captained his country at that level in the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in 2019. He has also played in Denmark’s Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 teams and has earned 30 youth international caps in total, scoring three goals.
