Second-half goals from Jayden Meghoma and Kaye Furo saw Brentford come from behind to beat Rennes 2-1 in a pre-season fixture at La Piverdière training centre on Saturday morning.

The Bees trailed at the interval after Rennes broke the deadlock nine minutes before half-time, but Meghoma levelled with a low finish off the post before Furo completed the turnaround seven minutes later.

The Bees started brightly and controlled much of the opening exchanges, with Yunus Emre Konak registering the first attempt of the contest after eight minutes. The midfielder met a dropping ball on the edge of the penalty area but sent his half-volley over the crossbar.

Rennes threatened for the first time five minutes later. A ball over the top was brought under control superbly by the hosts’ forward, who then jinked his way to the byline and played across the six-yard box, but Jannik Schuster made an important block before scrambling the ball clear.

The French side began to create more openings as the half progressed. A fierce strike from the edge of the box took a deflection which wrong-footed Hákon Valdimarsson, although the ball flew narrowly over the crossbar.

They went close again after 28 minutes when an early cross was played into the path of their striker, who got ahead of his marker but diverted a good opportunity just wide.

Valdimarsson then produced an excellent save to keep the scores level. A Rennes midfielder broke through the middle of the pitch and charged into the final third before finding himself one-on-one with the Bees goalkeeper, who did superbly to tip an effort heading towards the bottom corner around the post.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock after 36 minutes. Another driving run into the final third went unchecked before Alan Do Marcolino curled a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Brentford looked to respond immediately. Kevin Schade drove forwards three minutes later and found Josh Dasilva, who cut inside onto his left foot, but his resulting effort was blocked by a defender.

Rennes had another sight of goal just before the interval when their striker received possession in space around the edge of the penalty area, although his curling effort was comfortably gathered by Valdimarsson.

The west Londoners then came within inches of levelling immediately after the restart. Mikkel Damsgaard produced a clever backheel into the path of Dasilva, who cut inside again and, this time, sent a powerful effort crashing against the far post.

Brentford continued to threaten in the second half. Schade found half-time substitute Gustavo Nunes, who raced away from his defender before shooting straight at the goalkeeper, but his shot was parried by the goalkeeper.

Some excellent pressing then allowed the Bees to regain possession high up the pitch after 53 minutes. Damsgaard produced another clever flick to release Andre Gray, but the Rennes goalkeeper was alert to deny him.

Brentford eventually found their equaliser with 19 minutes remaining. Nunes drove forward before playing an early ball over the top for Meghoma. The full-back controlled the ball under pressure from a recovering defender, before taking his time and firing a low effort in off the post.

Rennes almost restored their advantage two minutes later, striking the crossbar from a tight angle.

But the Bees completed the turnaround after 78 minutes. Damsgaard dinked the ball into Nunes, who squared across goal for Furo. The striker met it from point-blank range, and his effort deflected off the goalkeeper and into the net to put Brentford ahead.

The Bees saw out the remaining minutes to secure a 2-1 victory in France.
