Brentford have exercised the option in Sergi Canos’ contract to extend his stay at the club until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Canos spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Greek Super League side Olympiacos, where he made eight appearances, scoring four goals and providing three assists, before picking up an injury which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

The midfielder’s contract was due to expire on 30 June, but the club have decided to trigger the option to extend his deal until next summer.

“Last season was difficult for Sergi. His start to the season was delayed by injury and he didn’t feel he made enough appearances for us," said head coach Thomas Frank.

"In the second half of the season, he started to find form at Olympiacos but then was hit by injury again.

"Therefore, this summer, we need to get Sergi fit, back to his best, and making a big contribution for us.

"Like Pontus Jansson and Saman Ghoddos, Sergi is already a Brentford legend and I’m looking forward to having him back in pre-season.”

Only 12 players in Brentford history have played more games and scored more goals for the club than Canos, who first joined the Bees on loan from Liverpool in August 2015.

Quickly establishing himself as a terrace favourite, a then 18-year-old Canos ended his debut campaign with seven goals from 39 appearances.

The former Barcelona youngster had a brief spell with Norwich City ahead of his return to TW8, this time permanently, six years ago.

He made more than 100 appearances over the next two-and-a-half years, scoring 16 goals, but a serious knee injury picked up in October 2019 ruled him out for nine months.

Canos returned to fitness for Brentford’s run to the 2019/20 play-off final, before enjoying a career-defining season as Frank’s side reached the Premier League 10 months later.

The Spaniard played 55 matches that campaign, scoring nine goals. He featured in every one of our Sky Bet Championship and play-off fixtures; his four goals in December, which included a stunning hat-trick at Cardiff City, saw him nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award.

Canos passed 200 games for the club during that season and wrote his name further into Bees history against Arsenal on the opening night of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, as he scored our first goal back in the top flight after a 74-year absence - a strike that saw him pick up his second Brentford Goal of the Season prize.

In total, Canos has played 249 games for Brentford, 36 of which have come in the Premier League. He has scored 36 goals for the Bees.
