Brentford Under-21s return to Wheatsheaf Park on Sunday as they welcome Sheffield United Under-21s for Professional Development League action (1pm kick-off).

Following a draw with Hull City to kick off their league campaign, Sam Saunders’ side will be eyeing their first win of the season.

A two-game home start to the league season will be met with two northern away fixtures across the first two weeks of September, with trips to face Huddersfield Town (2 September) and Crewe Alexandra (15 September) sandwiching a home clash with Wigan Athletic (8 September).

Ethan Laidlaw has started the season promisingly, after scoring the equaliser against Hull City.

Last time out

The young Bees suffered a 3-0 defeat to Hanwell Town in the London Senior Cup this week.

The postponed fixture from last season saw Brentford hold momentum for much of the game; however, they were unable to put that work onto the scoreboard.

Previously against Sheffield United, the west Londoners fought out a gritty 2-1 win in last season’s PDL play-off semi-final.

Defender Benjamin Fredrick put the young Bees ahead late in the first half, but Sheffield United answered soon after the half-time break.

Iwan Morgan stepped up in extra-time, with the forward finding the back of the net to send Brentford to the PDL final, a game they defeated Bournemouth 3-2.

About Sheffield United

The young Blades opened their season similarly to Brentford, drawing 1-1 with Cardiff City away from home.

The side impressed across the 2024/25 campaign, finishing top of the PDL North group with 19 wins, seven draws and five losses.

A 2-1 loss to the young Bees in the play-off semi-final spelt the end of their season, however, Sheffield United were unable to defend their 2023/24 national title triumph over Birmingham City.
