Brentford Under-18s ended their Professional Development League season on a high on Saturday, beating Hull City Under-18s 3-0 at Bishop Burton College.

Under-16s striker Jai Nwosu opened the scoring for the young Bees in the first half, Brentford taking a one-goal lead into the half-time break. Jovan Kasujja added the west Londoners’ second late in the second half, before Nwosu secured his brace soon after.

In sunny conditions in Hull, Gary McDermott’s side started the better of the two across the opening 10 minutes, the Bees camped in their opponents' half and posed a threat in attack.

It was Hull who came close to opening the scoring though, on 15 minutes. A dangerous cross from the right side was met by George Akinniranye on the edge of the six-yard box, the forward putting a shot across his body. Brentford goalkeeper Felix Lyon did well to keep it out from close distance and then fisted the rebound away from the danger area.

Having dominated the majority of the early possession, the Bees came close to finding a reward on 22 minutes. Jai Bansoodeb’s slick through ball freed up Domeiro Bobb-Semple down the left side of the box, but his shot was sent directly at Jake Hopper in goal for the hosts.

A minute later, Coran Madden delivered a well-placed ball to Nedved Owusu down the right side of the box, but his powerful strike was kept out. The winger looked to head home the rebound, but Hopper did well to keep it out again.

Undeterred, Owusu was at it again one minute later. A brilliant individual move saw the no.7 beat his defender and earn a free look on goal, however, his shot sailed across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.

At the other end, the hosts looked to threaten on the counterattack as Emmanuel Sarpong made his way deep into Brentford’s box before crossing the ball, but Under-16 defender Harry Biggs was there to clear the danger area for the visitors.

McDermott’s side broke the stranglehold on 34 minutes through Nwosu. Nathaniel Ogungbemi’s long throw from the left side bounced off the pack inside the box before Nwosu’s glancing header found the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The Bees were close to making it two soon after. Bansoodeb’s corner from the right side found an open Ogungbemi at the back post, but his powerful header was cleared off the line. The rebound fell to the edge of the box where Yerime Ouattara was waiting, but his shot was blocked and cleared.

Lyon was forced into another quality save as half-time inched closer. Alfie Bray found himself in space deep in Brentford’s box and was one-on-one with Lyon, the Bees goalkeeper doing well to get low and make a superb save.

Down the other end, Nwosu broke forward down the left side on the counterattack before crossing to Bobb-Semple at the back post, the ball missing the winger’s outstretched boot by inches.

Coming out of the half-time break, both sides brought the intensity to start the second half.

On 59 minutes, Lyon was called into action again. A Hull free-kick sailed to the right side of the box before being headed back across the box, a powerful header then sent goalward that Lyon did well to secure.

While both sides continued to play at a high intensity, chances on goal were few and far between as both backlines stood firm.

On 78 minutes, the Bees pieced together a well-worked set piece as Bansoodeb lined up for a free-kick from long range. The no.10 played a quick ball to Naeem Giscombe down the right side, who immediately crossed once inside the box, but the ball was blocked out for a Brentford corner.

The breakthrough second goal came with three minutes to play. Bansoodeb’s through ball freed up Kasujja, who found himself one-on-one with Hopper, the striker making no mistake as he finished past the Hull goalkeeper.

A third goal came moments later as Nwosu secured his brace. Giscombe’s cross from the right side was perfect, allowing Nwosu to tap it home from close range to secure the 3-0 win.
