Summer signing El Hadji Malick Diouf turned in a promising display on his first Premier League start for Brentford as Keith Andrews' side returned to top-flight action with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.
The Senegal international made his presence felt with a marauding display at left-back, having more touches (64) and winning more tackles (4) than any of his team-mates.
Diouf was also involved in the build-up to Kristoffer Ajer's late equaliser for the Bees, a goal which typified a team performance Andrews afterwards described as full of "grit and resilience."
It was Diouf's positive forward pass to Jaidon Anthony that sparked a sharp exchange between the winger and Ajer, who flashed the ball past Zion Suzuki to claim his second goal inside a week, following a stunning Nations League volley for Norway.
Deployed at left-back, with Keane Lewis-Potter shifted into a playmaking no.10 role, Diouf combined defensive intensity with attacking intent.
As the Bees looked to stretch Villa’s right flank, the 21-year-old delivered four crosses and drew more fouls (2) than any other Brentford player.
Diouf also registered one key pass and came inches away from his first assist for the club, with Igor Thiago narrowly failing to connect with his whipped cross in late in the 90.
Elsewhere, Yehor Yarmoliuk capped another influential display with his first goal of the 2026/27 campaign.
Andrews highlighted the Ukrainian's growing composure in front of goal afterwards, and there was ample evidence of that in the way Yarmoliuk dispatched a half-volley after Thiago's cross had been partially cleared.
An athletic foil to the excellent Vitaly Janelt, Yarmoliuk also demonstrated his passing range, completing three long balls, the joint-most of any outfield player on the pitch.
Janelt, meanwhile, completed more passes (42) than any other Brentford player and recorded the Bees' highest pass completion rate (91 per cent).
It was an end-to-end contest against the reigning Europa League winners, with Andrews later asserting that he backs his side to go toe-to-toe with the Premier League's top teams.
Having seen Yarmoliuk's early opener overturned by two Villa goals, Brentford showed plenty of character to battle back and share the spoils.
That determination was also reflected in a resilient defensive display, with Aaron Hickey excelling in an unfamiliar centre-back role after Jannik Schuster was forced off.
Hickey took admirably to his task, completing 96 per cent of his passes and helping Brentford keep their hosts' dangerous front pairing of Nicolas Jackson and Johan Manzambi in check. The visitors' defensive commitment was epitomised by Ajer, who punched the air in delight after deflecting a goalbound strike from Emi Buendía wide of the target.
The unflappable Caoimhín Kelleher also made a string of impressive stops, his first-half double save from Jackson and John McGinn a particular highlight. Alongside Leeds keeper James Trafford, the Irishman now tops the Premier League for saves this season, with 22.
Still unbeaten six games into the Premier League campaign, Andrews and his players had plenty of positives to take from the performance.
The Bees will now welcome a full week back on the training pitch before entertaining Liverpool at the Gtech next Saturday.
